Finally picked up a Blur

I've wanted one for a long time but never seemed to follow through with ordering one online, and the only store around me (Wal-Mart bleh) only ever had the serrated blackwash version. But I have noticed the last couple months at my Wal-Mart they have had the serrated bw on display, but the tag says it's the olive version. I asked a young guy working about it before, but he wasn't to enthused about looking through the stock, and said no man sorry I guess we don't have it. But today I was finally in there at the same time the usual guy works back there and I knew he would at least try to help me, he's a good guy and has worked in that sporting goods department for 20 years. Well, lo and behold, they had a pain edge olive blur under the case waiting for me to find it. First impressions are really good so far. I love how it feels in my hand, and it's much lighter than I thought it would be. It's really sharp out the box and I'm happy about that, I might let it go with the factory edge for awhile. The speedsafe feels much nicer on this knife than it does on the Chinese made Kershaw knives I've used. I don't know why that would be but it does. Also, it's much easier to close one handed than those other knives. When I release the liner lock the blade free falls to about 50% or until it hits my thumb and the force of the spring is easy to overcome from there. I think I'm going to de-assist it here in a minute and decide how I like it better, but being a guy that has never cared for assisted knives, I'm pleasantly surprised by this one.

Nice grab.

Let us know what you think about the knife once de-assisted. I think one of these with a nice steel like 154cm, S30V, or whatever else I can find, may be on the list this year.

Will do, I'm getting ready to do it now. I thought about grabbing the s30v model, but I have talked to a lot of people that own blurs and a lot of folks say the 14c28n blades are wicked slicers, and that's mostly what I use my knives for. If everything goes as well as it seems it will, I can definitely see myself picking up other variants.

I own some knives that are 10 times more expensive and I love carrying this knife. It was pretty much the knife that got me into knives so it'll always have a spot in my drawer. This is my S30V version and it's awesome.

It's almost like you wrote this just for me. I had the same experience, right down to the color and steel of my Blur.

I just de-assisted this knife, wow! I liked it with the assist, which is a miracle, but it's almost like it was meant to be taken out. It was so easy I was a little worried when I got it back together lol. I didn't tighten the pivot all the way down thinking it would be stiff, so when I closed it it rubbed the handle, and I thought "here we go", but I tightened the pivot snug and it pushed that blade dead center and it's smooth as any folder I've ever owned, but with zero blade play. And I mean zero, as in not even a tiny bit. I don't think I've ever had a blade that didn't move a smidge and I've owned a few "high end" knives. And it flies open. Just as fast as when it was assisted. I'm very pleased. The detent did take a little bit of a hit, but it's not close to flopping out on it's own. I actually kind of like where it's at because I can deploy it with a wrist flick kind of like an axis lock. This is a really cool knife, I'm glad I picked one up finally.

I passed over it for a long time because it seemed so ubiquitous.

Well, I'm an idiot. It's ubiquitous for a reason!

Anyone who's passed over this knife because they've seen it in forums and on YouTube so much it basically feels like you've already owned it, stop. Forget everything you know about Kershaw, SpeedSafe and the Blur, and go put one in your hand.

I'd rather fondle my PM2, 940 or Gemini, but when it comes to cutting, that Blur is tough to beat.

That's what I want to hear! As much as I love the form factor and how it looks, I can't wait to start cutting with it, and I'm hoping it's at least as good as the rest of the package. The blade shape begs to slice into something.

I also love how the grip pattern on the clip side leaves aluminum exposed for the pressure point of the clip. On mine it was a little crooked out of the box, but if you loosen up the clip screws you can line the clip up exactly with the little bare channel of aluminum between the grip inserts. Great design on that little aspect. Works out tip up or tip down.

I had to have them send me a new clip because my original was way too tight. Kershaw is always very easy to deal with.

This was one of the first modern folders I got so many years ago. Kershaw doesn't design knives like this anymore. Their new stuff doesn't match this quality. That skateboard tape stuff (I think it's actually rubberized) I had only seen that on Microtechs for the longest time. The Blur was the only other knife with it.

Not that it makes the knife, even if it didn't have that it is still such a solid user friendly knife.

I agree they need to make one without speedsafe.

One of the first knives I bought when my knife interest manifested in 2012 was the standard 1670BLK Blur. It was my first assisted opener and first Kershaw. I really liked that knife, and it did come in handy for a lot of tasks. Some things I didn't like were the the black blade finish, the recurve, and the tip-down only/no deep carry option for the clip.

I eventually sold it to a friend who loves it. If it had a steel-colored blade I probably would have kept it. I have considered replacing it with the S30V version which has the look I prefer, but I have a ZT 0566 that fills the same niche perfectly and I really like that ZT.

But the Blur is a great, iconic knife. Good choice.

I believe the recurve will be what makes or breaks it for me. That and the blade steel itself. Obviously it'll take some time before I know, but if the steel will hold its edge for a decent amount of time (I don't expect it to wear as slow as s30v or even 154cm, and that's ok with me I like to sharpen my knives regularly), and the recurve isn't unbearable to put an edge back on, I can see having this knife for a long time.

Spyderco Sharpmaker or something else with a narrow profile will help keep the edge on it. I was able to take the factory edge to a new level on the Sharpmaker. I think I could have shaved my face with that thing. It held up pretty well for my needs. Obviously if you cut a lot of abrasive materials it will dull faster. You just need to match the steel and blade geometry to your needs and to your sharpening skills and tools.

I'm a fan of 14C28N. Takes a supersteel edge with AUS8 effort. Edge retention is pretty good. I'd rate it better than the BD-1 Spyderco uses in the Manix and just a shade under S30V.

I'm not a very experienced sharpener. Only ever used a sharpmaker. The edge I can get on my 14C28N blades makes me giggle.

That damn sharpmaker lol not buying one yet keeps coming back to haunt me. My local pawn shop has a lightly used one marked for 50 I guess I need to go ahead and bite the bullet and get it this week. I have a standard lansky kit, but I've been using my diamond and Arkansas stones lately since I've gotten decent at free hand sharpening, but I don't think I want to go butchering my new knife trying to get the recurve sharp. Oh well, guess I finally have my excuse to grab the sharpmaker if they still have it.

Oh for God's sake now I have to see what all the fuss is about and run to Wal-Mart to pick up a damn Blur. 😁

You can work the recurve on flat stones, you just have to use the edges and it takes a little time to get good at it.. If you have the Lansky turnbox with the round rods, those'll do fine for the recurve part of it. You can also buy some wet/dry silicon carbide sandpaper in various grits and use it wrapped around a dowel or a stiff tube of some kind.

It's my pleasure to pass my burden off to the next knife nut [emoji16] make sure to pay attention to what the price tag says the model is, it might be something different than what they have displayed and you'll be lucky enough to have a choice of a couple different ones.

I have the lansky guided sharpener not the turn box. I would probably just go for it and try it on my stones if it was the stone washed blade but it's got the black coating on it and will look terrible lol. I don't mind the coating showing use, and kind of like it actually, but signs of terrible sharpening just looks, well, terrible lol. I have been wanting to try out using wet dry sandpaper though, I hear you can get a really nice polished edge if you use the right grits.
