Finding/approaching a mentor?

I have had several shop visits and have visited another makers shop as well.
One thing (out of many) about this particular maker that impressed me, was watching was free along with asking questions, as long as I didn't slow the pace of work. Actual teaching was at the shop rate. I have adopted a similar system. I have been working with one student for over a year and have adopted a middle ground as well. I have been doing a lot of forging and so the grinding equipment sits idle, He comes over and uses my equipment we both work at the same time. He gets the benefit of my attention in between heats for instruction and I get some work done too. This system will not work for everyone. By doing this I get work done and he gets a discount on the shop rate. He also pays for all materials, but belts and bandsaw blades are included in the shop rate. If you come to my shop and want to watch its free, I don't drink beer, bring a pen and pad.
