After a recent thread made clear to me the dangers of powerful tanto blades made of Carpenter steel, I decided it was time to finally dive into knife making.

Having seen for myself, in that thread, the potential of a blade made using these materials, even a simple, unfinished blade, I was sold. This is all you need to see to convince yourself:

So I set about building a prototype model myself. Let me introduce the banana tanto:

As you can see, we've opted for a natural banana skin material for the handle and it's amazing stuff. Cold Steel will probably rename this to Banan-Ex when they start using it on their knives.

We're working out the optimal heat treat still, attempting to apply the crazy crystal weaving foundation thread's mystic wisdom to achieve high Rockwell numbers without sacrificing toughness. For now we're running them very, very soft to keep them super tough, so we're only going up to about two points harder than CRK runs their S35VN.

This is just a rough prototype, we were shooting for Emerson level quality on the proto (we figured we could achieve that with our eyes closed, drunk, in thirty seconds). Production models will be far superior, we're partnering with ZT to produce them. Sadly they won't be out until sometime next year, but you'll be able to get the Microtech version long before then, I'm sure.

Now I suppose it's official, I am a knife maker.

Stunning work man. Looks like you used a combination of banana materials to make the hamon. Did you use an oil or water quench?

We're using the crystal weaving technique, so there are actually seven stages, but the first short oil quench is at 465 degrees and then after air cooling it goes back into the low temp oil at around 190 degrees. We also do cryo, but that comes way down in stage six.

It's no match for my fearsome Close Quarter Carrot Mk.7, that I will unveil exclusively to you, my fellows BFF.
Unfortunately, I can't take any order before 2021, unless you're MARSOC SOCOM GSG9 etc.

We have our engineers working on a carrot tanto prototype as we speak:

For proper heat treating, and to get the best crystal structure, you'll need to heat to 475, then quench in butter and flame it in booze, while applying sugar for optimal structure. It's the Fosters method.

I've preordered one but I'm going to have Josh at Razor Edge Knives regrind it into a slicer.

I presume all work is being performed in a Level 38.92 clean room Gregory?? I am sincerely hoping said clean room is protected by state of the art security systems.....plural???
Please notify us immediately, if not sooner.
Thank you.

PS.....can I pre order and send the cash F&F???? Please???
Joe

Can I baton this one? A knife is worthless if you can't hammer it through a log. And when will the folder version be released? Will you be offering any upgrades to your blade material, other than the Cavendish stuff you're already using?

I can only afford a $1,000. deposit right now. I hope that's enough.

Sounds delicious! Try that with your CPM-M4!

While we believe the thick stock is necessary for making videos stabbing through car hoods, we understand why you might want to improve slicing performance and Josh does excellent work.

In addition to a clean room and state of the art security system, we have a four story museum at our 2 acre production facility. Our facility is located under an active volcano and is surrounded not by ill-tempered sea bass but rather sharks with laser beams.

We are planning a folder, don't worry. We've asked Jason Brous to help us with a design, so I'm sure he'll copy something Jakub at Poltergeist Works has made and get right back to us.

Also, we're planning to branch out into plantains for our choppers, stay tuned!

Sounds good on those folders - just don't let anyone at M*******h know about it. ;)

Plantains?! Slow down, man. It's not like you're trying to chop through Busse's or something.

ps - I'm gonna run hide now, before the hogs find me and feed me to the... well, hogs. :pig:

That is what I call a green manufacturing environment..... just eat what you "grind" off. What's for dinner honey? Bananas again?
