Just picked up a Pelican 1010 for a fire kit project that will fit in the front of my custom shoulder bag(someone asked for pics so I will do those today too...a little later than I said I would:o)
I wanted something I could take out as a stand alone piece to and while a nice traditional leather pouch would be cool and kick a$$ it does not go with my Cordura bag look:D
I plan on tossing some tinder, PJCB's, fatwood and a small knife(one of my Micro Bleaches) into it. I hope to work on it this afternoon.

So, lets see your traditional and non-traditional fire kits.

here's one that lives in my B.O.B... i made it a few years ago...

it has:
-pack of wind/waterproof matches
-pack of tinder-quick firestarters
-a mini bic with zip tie around the gas, to prevent unwanted leaks
-magnesium firestarter with hacksaw blade striker
-a mini tri-winged esbit stove
-4 esbit cubes
-recently added, but not pictured.. foil wind screen and a chunk of fatwood..

all housed in an Army decon container....:)

i also recently scored a really cool, more traditional fire kit that was put together by CBryant... i'll try and get some pics up soon...EDIT: it's just like Johns...

Here`s one of C Bryant`s kits he sent me, including a striker he forged himself.

I decided I needed a pouch to carry it all in, so this morning I went to the shop and made this leather pouch to go on my belt.

Now I need to practice using it!

Cool kits guys!

Stomper...that is some clean leather work:thumbup::thumbup:

Anyone here (besides Magnussen) have one of Magnussen's kits? I've always loved those, but just can't afford one.

I've been thinking about buying one of his small neck pouch kits, but even that is about the price of a decent knife or axe, hard for me to justify.

I made up two of these kits last year for my Brother and Niece before hunting season.

kit contents

small far wood
jute twine
small napkin/dryer leint

Here is one I've put together that I keep in my Sabercat.

Witz box with Stick-and-Strike strip on the outside & REI strike pad superglued inside top, REI Stormproof Matches, Diamond Strike Anywhere Matches, REI Stormproof Match striker cut from box, SERE pocket saw, large firesteel, & REI Strikers.

While this kit is without tinder, I do keep several items in the Sabercat for it. I have cotton, duct tape, petroleum jelly(small jar and Johnson & Johnson Lip Balm), and wet naps. When a wet nap is dry it tears into some pretty good tinder. Same goes for any kind of wipes.

Excellent kits guys! I just have to upload my pics but I have mine done now. First impressions, a bit heavy....I guess I'll have to deal as it is a pretty heavy case.

More to come soon...

My fire kit is in a Strepsils tin Similar to an Altoids tin.
It has a cut down doan block ( lot of magnesium on one of those) some pre-prepared tinder bundles ( parrafin cotton balls) and some rubber strips.

Rick showed me his kit and we used every part of it over the course of a day during the weekend gathering. It is kick ass.

Nice altoids kit Pimpnugget. Like the cutoff file. How did you manage that? That file would probably produce a spark from a piece of flint too!

A bit minimalistic by comparison, but it is waterproof and the light weight means that I always have it with me:

Match Box Capsule from GoingGear:
-Mini hacksaw blade
-cotton ball
-PJCBs
-ferro rod (also from GG)

Here is my kit.

The Nalgene bottle I plan to use for PJCB and I can just pull out a bit as I need it. Albeit a bit big for the use, maybe I would be better off to use the straw method(how are you guys sealing the ends of the straws?) and then I could get more stuff into the kit.
Fatwood with jute wrapped around it, I plan to wrap some more.
Ferro rod with natural canvas handle I Gorrilla glued on.
Bark River Trickle, I was going to put one of my Micro Bleaches(the knife in my avatar) in the kit, but the Barkie was not getting used so I thought it would be a good place for it. I may change it out though, I like the Trickle but prefer the MB as an overall user. I could also wrap the MB with jute too for more supplies in the kit.

I will say the Pelican 1010 is a very good case, but it is heavy. In my shoulder bag I don't notice it, but I think once I attach a strap to the 1010 I could wear it on the belt as a stand alone piece, but again, on the belt you would definetly know it was there.
Here is my Custom Ostrom Outdoors shell bag. I will put up a review after I get some more use with it.

Nice to see the traditional and non traditional here.

MTNFOLK MIKE- I used to have a ton of those decon kit cases I got while I was in the U.S.M.C. but I can't find any of them now. This weekend I was at my Dad's house and he was using one as a cigarette case. The only one he had left ( he found them and started giving them away), They are about the best waterproof case I have run into, to bad they only come in one size.

One other thing they are great for ( if you camp a lot) is to use as a soap dish. Fit a bar of Irish springs perfectly and you don't have to worry about getting soap all in your kit from putting a wet bar of soap bag in your hygene bag.

I have seen the decon cases for sale at gun shows before but I always wondered if they had any chemicals in them that needed to be cleaned out before use?

My FireKit...

This is what is in it right now....

firekit.jpg

Walmart Torch Lighter, Mil Match Case with Ancient and very Dry Matches, Spark Lite Kit, Scout FireSteel with Fat Wood, Film Canister full of Sterno, More Lighter Pine, Vic Trailmaster? (like the Trekker, but adds the file....), Bic Lighter (minus the zip tie safety, as I have never noticed any loss of fluid), Film Canister full of Coghlan's answer to Cotton & Vaseline. All nicely contained in a Kifaru Pull Out.

Missing - Whistle and Headlight....

Alternate or Additional Fill - Cotton & Vaseline, and/or Fire-starters of your preference.

Marion

I just picked up a cool tobacco tin style kit, anyone know where I could get a nice leather belt pouch for it? I don't want to spend a crazy amount of money on it.
