Firestarter ?

Im pretty sure the thing at fault here is the writer.
I for one have always been able to get a fire going under moderately challenging conditions. Even managed to get a poor feather stick going as well.

That is a clear case of a novice repeating the same mistake 300 times and writing about it as if he's not a novice because he repeated the same mistake 300 times and counted that as a base of experience.

As he said, making sparks is not the issue, bringing knowledge, experience, and technique together is. Mac

ha ha - I think he should be called 'The Junky Gear' not the 'The Gear Junky'. If he couldn't get maya dust to light - I don't what the heck he is doing. He must have his firesteel too high above the tinder and the sparks are essentially extinguished by the time they reach it.

My seven year old son makes fire with a BSA Hotspark and a variety of natural tinder. Mac

Is there a term for the opposite of a pyromaniac?

If so, this guy is it!

I wish we could add comments to the page... Edit: Ahh, we can. I've just registered!

I got maya dust to light with one flick. He said it smoldered, but um, guess he didn't want to blow it into an actual flame

Hahahaha! I read this and decided to register just to comment. Comment is below...

"I too, had to register just to comment on this. It is painfully obvious that the tester has NO experience with building a fire, as well as NO knowledge of fire-making techniques. The Swedish Department of Defense soldier that is mentioned is not, in fact, cold. He is warm and toasty in front of a well built and easily lit camp fire. Maybe the writer should stay inside on his comfortable couch with his nice tasty bag of Fritos and just watch things like this being done on TV instead of trying, failing, and then describing the product tested as faulty. This is yet another example of very poor reporting practices - a writer that obviously knows nothing about the subject, yet still writes a scathing review of a product that is otherwise known to the outdoor community as a very reliable tool. Is it the football's fault that you can't throw a spiral? Of course not. Though, I have a feeling that this writer still would have called the football faulty - and then written about it as if he were Tom Brady."

Nice comment hehehehe. This guy was not trying too hard to make fire, that is for sure. Although to be honest, the product did exactly what it was supposed to do. He said he had no problem getting it to make hot sparks. I'm pretty sure that is all the product is supposed to do! The rest was up to him, I guess he is the piece of faulty gear.

I use mine all the time, and have never once had any difficulty lighting a fire providing I was out of the wind.

dang it, I could not help myself on this one, I commented too. See what you guys did!

That was pretty funny

This clown has a blog/website and, apparently, wrote this for Outdoors Magazine. He's an absolute joke and an article like this shows his inexperience as well as foolishness. I commented at the Outdoors Mag site.

Idiots like him should not be published under the guise of an experienced outdoorsman.

Sounds like he could stand to have a lesson in firesteel technique from my 6yr old daughter!! She can prep tinder and strike a fire like a pro!

Jeeze.... I'm gonna do a review of a Miller MIG Welder... I've never welded with a MIG unit before but I'm sure a few minutes on the phone with a rep will teach me all I need to know........????

This guy should not be doing reviews.... NO BUSHTOOL FOR YOU!

I was married to a woman for twenty years who could never get a fire going either. No matter how many times I tried to teach her she would manage to screw it up. If her life had depended on making a fire she would be dead. She also had a black thumb when it came to gardening
I've used almost every kind of sparking device from ferro rods to blast matches to the Doan fire starting magnesium tool and I've been able to start a fire every time. I've even used old style flint and steel, as well as, the wood tube and piston method for starting fires. Either you've got talent or you don't.
Of course my fire starting began when I was three years old when I transferred a hot coal from an electric heater to a sofa. I still don't understand why my mother called the fire department.

I haven't used every method to start a fire, and I have been skunked on a couple occasions, but it was my fault every time.

I have, however, started fires without even trying! (note to self... clean up the wood dust behind the grinder before working on steel.)
