Firesteel Project

Nice Job, I try to use a hacksaw blades with as small teeth as possible to avoid wearing out the striker to quickly.

Thanks a lot Stingray! Now I know what are we talking about. So fatwood is basicaly resin saturated pine wood... mmm I guess I could get some from old tree stumps.
Mikel

Exactly! But I think Storl pretty much covered it. So, you can find your own, if you don't want to buy it, but if you do buy it, at least you know what it is.

Evolute: Thanks for the pictures and supplemental explanation.

CShepherd: Glad you figured it out. Once I came across this method, I found it MUCH easier to use fatwood; I can even get regular wood to light on a spark by using this method, it takes a little more work though.
P.S. The bigger your pile of shavings the easier it is to light.

Great pictures. Now I really know what I should expect when I get my pile of shavings. I can't wait to get my blanks and go out and give it a try.

Mikel,

Could you tell us where you bought your blanks in the UK? I might be interested too!

Thanks,

I don't use the teeth on the steel at all, just on the fatwood. But honestly after learning this other technique that'll end as well. I found that the squared off spine on my EDC knife worked great for getting nice long, thin curls.

charlie: nice job on the starter. If you need more corian , just go to a cabinet maker cause they have cut outs from sinks that most would give away or sell for a couple of bucks.
nice kit charlie.

Those pieces you sent will make quite a few. I appreciate it. I was suprised at how easy it was to work with.

Thanks again,

Charlie
