First Emerson. Disappointed. Help!

I bought an emerson combat kbit off smkw a month or so ago, came in and the blade was ROUGH and I do mean ROUGH. I also noticed the warranty card was missing. I was a little on the fence about ordering another BUT it wasn't Emerson's fault. So I gave it another chance and ordered one directly from them after speaking with Ernest himself about the issue. My new knife was flawless when it arrived and I have nothing but good things to say about their customer service. Sometimes shit happens, give them the opportunity to make you happy and they will. I actually have to send my kbit back in for a tip reprofile, I got a little over ambitious when I was playing with it one day. Not a manufacturing fault, my own dumb ass, but 18 bucks is well worth it for this knife. It is by far my favorite knife I own.

I remember this. I'm glad that worked out for you. I don't pry with my knifes. However, the Kbit covers most of my edc needs.

I love my 2 Emerson's.. I am sorry I offended anyone.. All I am saying is the QC should be much better.
I just look at things from a business perspective. The knives when they are right, are outstanding. For the small sample size (5) I owned, 2 had issues. Too me, that is an awful percentage. I don't think any US manufacturer of anything should have 40% QC issues on anything! Soo let's say I was unlucky..
What is acceptable for QC issues ?
My answer is less than 1%. No one is going to argue that EKI is close to that.
My guess is they probably ship 20% of their knives with issues.
Super Early lockup, dirty, poor centering, etc.
I think your best bet with an Emerson is to buy one second hand, from someone that can work the kinks out.
Again, great knives.. Lousy QC.

Having run my own company for 30 years.. I just have never seen lousy QC be a sustainable model.

BTW-- the guy that was bashing Harley clearly hasn't been on one in 10 years.. Harley makes a damn fine Motorcycle.
Check out the sales and bottom line..and after you do that I have a question.

How big of a building would you need to be able to print the kind of cash they make every quarter? The only person that prints more money than Harley is the US government.

Not bashing Harley. I was using a manufacturing example that you would be familiar with. I have followed their saga for years. They have improved dramatically from their days of AMF Voit ownership. They have tightened their standard deviations considerably. I thinking selling MV Agusta back to Italy for $1 was a great move. I wish they could have kept kept Eric Buell though. Less than 1% on their QC/ warranty? I wouldn't make any hasty generalizations about how much I ride. I have definitely been on a new Harley. In fact, I have ridden all the new HDs. I just sold my MV Agusta (F4) when HD sold them. I still wish the gas tank on the V-Rod was a little larger. Like Emersons, they are a work of art. However, they are not problem free. Again, we buy them because we like the look, feel, and performance. I own many Emersons. I have never had a QC problem. If I did, I'd send back. Maybe get Ernie to sign it. Best Wishes and be safe on your rides.

Oh God no! I would never even dream of prying with that thing! I was slashing things with it and the 2 liter coke bottle did the needle tip in. I reground that little part and the tip will slice quite well again but its not the needle sharp dagger tip it was before. Ill send it in and have them do it back up the way it was. Like I said, my own dumb fault. I knew better than to play with it but oh well. Oh, before someone says something about the quality being shit if you can bend the tip on a coke bottle, thats really not the case. Until you see just how fine that tip is you really cant understand. I was also slashing her the top where the plastic is much much thicker. Again, not the knifes fault, me for being a dumbass. I can say though that the kbit will take the top off a 2 liter with a quickness!

Oh man, I dropped my GJ on the concrete the same day I got it.

Now that beautiful needle tip is gone forever. I just figure, eh, it's an Emerson, the more beat up it gets, the better it looks.

Ordinarily I would agree too, but with a kbit its kinda made for one thing and one thing only. That one thing is much easier with a sharp as possible tip. haha

For the combat kbit, I completely agree...it is definitely made for one thing. But I think cncpro11 was referring to his Gentleman Jim blade.

The EKI customer service is top-notch, isn't it? That's pretty cool that you directly spoke to Ernie!

Oh I couldn't have been happier, I was completely taken aback when I realized who I was talking to. I figured I would get the standard person answering my questions who was less familiar with the product line than I was, you know, that same crap you seem to get everywhere. Much to my surprise I got the man responsible for designing every knife in the lineup! You cannot ask for better service than that!

Are you sending it (GJ) in to have it reground (profiles)?

If you are asking me, the answer is heck no.
I was able to repair the tip with my diamond stones and it is just slightly scarred and really a non - issue.
I did post before in this sub forum when it first happened, and how pleased I was at the lower rockwell Emerson H/T's their blade steel to.
Besides, as someone mentioned, it adds character!
