Did a trade with a guy and got a 2008 PE Satin CQC8 for $75 and a used AR stock that I don't use anymore... couldn't be happier with the deal.

Have a few questions though since I've never had an Emerson and non around these parts to compare to..

The gentleman I purchased from said it was a 2008 model. It is is excellent condition and came with box/registration card and blade looks new. I did notice looking at other pics that mine only has 2 screws on the non-clip side where others I see have three. Also mine has the older chisel grind vs v-grind. Lockup is super tight but the action is super slow... is there breakin period for these?

Thanks,
Hawk

I never handled an 8 in depth so I don't know about the screw. And yes there is a break in time. Just keep fondling it.

:D hehe hehe... I said fondle

Also.. is the satin finish a coating? It's kind of gray... I just figured it to be a bead blast blade when looking at pics.

Take it all apart. Put good grease in it after you clean it all well.

Then put some of that teflon tape on the pivot screw. Put it back together and tighten the pivet until it feels right.

Then just use it.

That is all there is to an Emerson my friend.

Yeah, Emerson "satin" finishes are just a coating. They are starting to use real satin finishes this year though, starting with the mini a-100

Nice score on the 8

On the 2 8s I have the non waved, swedged 8 has 3 screws and the waved non swedged 8 has 2 screws.

Good deal.. thanks for all the replies.. It's a sweet knife.. glad to FINALLY have an Emerson!!

You sure its a chisel grind? I have a 2006 vintage 8 and its a V grind.

No need for grease or whatever. Just a little oil in the hinge pin area from time to time and then use the crap out of it. It will loosen up on its own.

You did good. The 8 is one of the great Emerson models.

Welcome to the Emerson club :D I recently purchased a CQC 7A last month.
Liked it so much, that I immediately ordered an A-100, liked it also.I now have a mini A-100 on order. and my knife must haves, starts all over again. I told the wife some 8 or 9 purchases ago that this was definitely the last one.

Grease will keep junk out better than oil and hold up better.

Teflon tape allows you to set the tension to your preference without loctite.

But, do what you like.

Congrats on your first Emerson. Bought my first a few weeks ago.
I was totally impressed, and now I have three. The CQC-8 is next on my list.:)

That's a great knife - on the large side though, and I like 'em large.

The CQC13 is a sweet sucker. Just right for EDC.

As far as lube goes, I would give Tuff-Glide a try. Its a 'dry' lube so doesn't attract gunk. I bought a bottle many moons back and it lasts forever.

I also have Break Free that I use from time to time, but only because it smells better. :D

I will have to try that tuff-glide. The reason I use the Chris Reeve grease is because you can put it on the areas that contact each other while disassembled and put it back together. No grease is exposed after assembly. I "think" it would keep moisture from getting in where the grease is also. No attracted dirt/grime/dust from oil running all over the place.

Thanks for the tip on tuff-glide:thumbup: I will have to try it for myself.

The CRK grease stuff definitely works better. Tuf-glide stinks REALLY bad and it doesn't go away even after several days. I tried to use it and I had to disassemble and wash all that crap off. Stick with the fluorinated grease.

I use tuf-glide as well, i'v had my bottle of it for ages too.
Just the smallest spot on each washer is all you need.

ive used my cqc8 for almost five years and love it . awesome knife and one of the best designs out there .

Or, you could skip all that and just put a few drops of light mineral oil in the pivot. At least that's all i do to my Emerson's :D
