I am buying my first bit of equipment to set up my small knife making shop. Looking at Bader grinders (pretty expensive) any other recommendations along with a Kiln?
Thank you,
Cheers

Save the kiln and send out for heat treatment

All the little things will spend that money anyway

Drill press

Anything you build yourself will save money and will make your budget stretch a little farther, you can literally build your own grinder and save $1500 or more if you are good at finding stuff (scrap yarding)

Rog, I need a good beginner set up though ASAP, I have a 30 knife order already and want to get going ASAP. What company can I send to, to heat treat? Also best adhesive/glue compound for handles do you guys suggest?

Peters heat treat... 4 knives ONLY is $100 after your first four knives in a batch you can send up to a total of 20 for the same $100 price. After you're 20 blades, it is $2 per blade.

Think about it.

What do you mean, you have a 30 knife order when you are still asking about " a good beginner set up" of equipment and glue ?

spell out some more details please.

You are in San Diego Tru Grit is in Ontario and can do your heat treatment. It is like $10 for a single blade. This is a great advantage for a new maker doing a few blades. It is only a couple of bucks for foil wrap and 4 for cryo.

Turn around is quick. They do a great job and you can give Jeff Mutz a call to ask any questions he is their knifemaker.

Now that Bader will not hurt so much. Get some belts from Tru Grit as well...they are a Bader Rep as well :)

Thank you AVigil.
will do.

12345678910- I have a company asking me to make them knives for a high end disaster bag. So they want 30 and I am just getting equipment. I have not in years but now am diving fully in. It has come a long way while I was in the Teams and didnt have time to do any blade work. So looking for recommendations.

Those disaster preparedness companies are making a killing off the city apartment dwellers, They come in and charge you 5 grand for $599 worth of cheap chinese stuff and some basic advice that you can get from the internet for free. and people buy the service, thats the funny part ;0)

Hmmm.... perhaps working my testiculars off all these years building house's for a living was a poor decision, preying on people's insecurities would have been much easier :0l

Not good to take orders when you don't have the equipment or skill to fill the order. Just saying
And you were in the Teams? Like navy SEAL?

Thank you for the support guys, great info, thanks.
Leethal, Ill let you know when I finish my first knife in this new venture and post pics, I like constructive criticism, always working on making stuff better.

Dont make american made knives for the man, be the man. Im sure that idea was lost somewhere between my fingertips and the computer on my other post ;0)

I asked if you were a navy seal? Is that what you meant by teams?

If you've got military education credits available, try training with Ed Caffrey, he's apparently accredited for that sort of thing.

A head's up
The internet is full of fake Seals, especially in the knife marketing world
Mick Strider - a prime example of fake military credentials for marketing.

You will see huge scepticism regarding that unless folks see reasonable proof.
