Hey guys.... ya, I know... 4yrs and this is my first attempt.:o Never felt the need for a guard. This one just kinda talked me into it. Not sure the best way but this suit my rather "raw" style. I cut the hole a little undersize and hot fitted it to the tang. It almost seemed too easy. I could imagine it being a PITA if someone was trying for the clean look. I'm just a dirty boy...

Any tip, hints, comments, suggestions, critiques, insults?

Very nice! That jimping on the guard looks cool.

I tried a guard a while back and it was laughable, I still need to finish up that dagger, lol.

Hot-fitting is cheating! Us stock-removal guys only get one chance to get a fit that good.

I like a little more shoulder for the guard front to seat up against but it's probably not a huge deal. How you going to seal it up? Solder? JB-Weld? Hemp twine and pine resin? :D

It looks like you made it to very close tolerances, not at all like a "first-timer" is SUPPOSED to do.

But the edge, hmmmmm, I guess you just didn't have time to "properly" finish it, huh? ;-)

How did you cut the serrations? Aren't the serrations supposed to be on the blade? (yea another joke)

Looks good for your style. If that's the forge finish from hot fitting still on the
guard, I'm impressed that you managed to keep it that flat in the fitting.

That thing is a pretty darn good press fit... but I'm planning on using JBweld to seal it up.

Yeah, I haven't gotten to finishing the knife yet.... lot's of work still to do.

That is the finish from the hot fitting. A little fitting, make it flat, a little fitting, make it flat, etc....... I think I went back and forth about five times until it seated properly.

I think the tang shoulders are to small for a seppa, Stacy. Now you have me wondering if I should try my hand a "texturing" a faux seppa in.... hmmmmm.

Thats just not fair:grumpy: I have done 3 guards now and stressed and filed for hours to get that near perfect fit. Well I actually made 4 guards but one I filed a bit too much and made a nice oval piece of scrap:o

Either way I like the way this one looks and hope to see the finished product in the future

That will definitely work! Always use something to seal it up no matter how good you think it fits. You will probably squeeze out 99% of the JB-Weld when you assemble the guard but that's OK. It's not there to hold it on, just for that extra assurance moisture can't get under the guard.

It looks great, man. I hope to see more fitted guards from you, that fits right in with your style and it's always nice to have options

Pretty nice. Of course, after four years, while it may be your first, you've had plenty of time to think about it. What kind of steel is it?

Rick - That's quite a nice fit! Is this knife destined for your standard handle treatment, or possibly some wood slabs..... another first(?).

That looks much better them my first two or three or more guards. I don't think I like you any more Rick.
Looks good man.

Love it. When do you get here? Can you come early and play in the shop for a day or two. (I'll need help finishing the knives anyway.) Plus we can do pre-show drinking.
