First hand made knife.

Let me put this out there. Photos will follow once I get home, but let me ask a few questions.
1. My knife copies ESEE laser strike/spear point design, which I am trying to put a convex edge on. Is this crazy for my very first knife with this type of edge?
2. I am using a Delta 1X30 belt sander, used it to shape profile and that let well, better than I expected. The grits I used to get where I am now have been 80 and 120. While trying to shape blade for a convex edge using 120 grit, the point begins to chip. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to step it up to 320 grit so that it’s not as aggressive as 120? And if so where do I find 320 and above grit paper for a 1X30 sander? Norton brand makes a 3 pack 50, 80-100, 120 grit and 3M makes 50 grit.
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Trugrit or supergrit should both have belts of all descriptions. Remember you don't want to put an edge on until after heat treat, to prevent warpage. If you're getting point deformation, you may be grinding it too thin, or just not keeping it oriented right. Sometimes that does happen though.

Yeah, you can leave the edge at about .20 or .15 before sending out for Heat treat. You can get the convex started, to mark where it will be, just don't sharpen to an edge.

Still have not had any time to upload some pics, but on more question. The other day I was wrapping up knife of the day and placed it in an unoiled rag for the night, the next day when I went back to it to finish up on some of the final edge polishing, not the knife edge. I noticed some light surface rust. Will a patina prevent this and do you patina a blade before or after HT?

So I have surfing the web for the last few days on how and with what the use as handle material on my wip. So while driving home today a buddy calls me and asks if I have any of this Brazilian koa or Kia wood left from a bar we made for his house. I tell him yes I do come by and pick it up but first you have to stop at lumber liquidators for me and get 2 sample pieces of their darkest, hardest and most exotic wood flirting they have. Of course it's Brazilian Koa Kia. Looks dynamite and best of all free.
