First khuk... Help from experienced owners needed

Okay, guys, I'm fairly new to the khukri world and I could use some suggestions. My first khuk would be primarily used for concealed carry and SD if possible/needed in that order. I'd also be training for this with this knife. I was checkin' out the Sirupati model for this task so I wanted to know what you guys think.

So...

1. What khukri would be best for this task in your opinion?

2. Am I correct in thinking that the measurement for the khukris is including the handle?

3. Are the DOTDs somehow inferior from the normal khuks you'd buy on the HI website?

Thanks guys!

A concealed carry khuk huh? I've never heard of that option. Interesting. Maybe a Kermabit???

DOTD are not all blems, and blems are not all bad knives. The OAL is measured from tip to tip of tang.

Welcome, btw. And enjoy, they're great knives.

1. Dunno... something small... a kerambit would prolly work well
2. yes measurements include the handle
3. not usually, sometimes there will be a "blem" which has a minor defect that doesn't effect performance and it is always marked as such. I suspect some of the DOTDs are actually better then the normal website ones... least I like to think so

Hey Chaya,

I have been carrying a knife concealed for years. In my opinion, there are no kuk's that lend themselves to concealed carry, at least in the area in which I live. I think they are just too bulky, especially if using the standard sheath. Having said that, I plan on picking up a kerambit when they become available again. Below are two pictures of kerambits with after-market sheaths.

Azreals Leather sheath:

Daniel Koster's sheath (I think):

I don't know what you could wear other than a bath robe or trenchcoat that would conceal a Sirupati.

If you' like some ideas about solid concealed carry pieces, feel free to PM me.

Good luck,

Bill

i think the most compact and slim available from HI would be the rusty sgian dubh.... with a new kydex sheath of course :)

as for larger knives? im not sure i would be able to recommend anything for ninja ops

Do you have a line on the kydex sheaths for the Rusty SD?

Chaya,

Concelaled carry khuk? Only 2 models come to mind...12" siru and bilton. Keramshee BTW is a better option.

I have carried both a Rusty SD and an HI kerambit. I have a fine kydex sheath made by Dan Koster which works very well, I made a high ride leather sheath for the SD.

Between the two I prefer the Sd due to its smaller size and light weight. Mine has a wicked point, and took a very nice edge. The handle is quite ergonomic and the knife lends itself to a self defense use quite well.

Hey guys, thanks a ton for all the advice! Willie that's one sweet karambit. I was actually thinking of getting one of those as well, but there's something attractive about a khukri. ;)

So anyway, yeah I thought "wow khukris are kinda large for CC" but then yesterday I saw this from http://www.himalayan-imports.com/faq/Training.htm :

"KAMI SHERPA

I have several customers who carry a khukuri concealed for defensive purposes. Every man has made or had made a shoulder rig which allows him to carry the knife under his arm, under a jacket. The usual khukuri of choice for this purpose is a 12 inch Sirupati.

When Yangdu was a young girl and used to travel to India to visit relatives she would ride what is called the "night bus." The male passengers would often try to become amorous with female passengers during the darkness of night so Yangdu would always tape a small 9 inch khukuri to the inside of her thigh. If she was approached she would reach under her anghi (long Sherpa dress) and whip out her little khukuri. Her stock phrase was, "if you want to keep that hand then keep it off me." "

Yeah kydex sheaths look awesome... but the custom made ones are PRICEY IMO for a sheath. I saw a guy saying he got two for his khuks and they were like $100 and $150, which is something I may be willing to pay later, but at this point I'll hold back.

Haha yeah Jai, about the "ninja ops" thing... It does seem a bit excessive I know, but I am still testing how big is the biggest blade I can carry on a best-case scenario day. Sometimes bigger is better in such a situation. :D Thanks for the links! I checked out Koster and was dazzled by a model he calls "skinner" on the front page. That thing is wicked. :D

Hey Arya I checked out the Keramshee... didn't find any pics or anything.

Thanks for the welcome, guys! I hope to benefit from your experience. :D

kydex is not that expensive at all...
i suggest you contact leatherface and get a rough cost
it should be very affordable :D

regarding the keramshee... thats the new adopted name for the HI kerambit lol :) do a search on kerambit

enjoy your stay... one big happy family here bro

Welcome, Chaya.

The smallest kukuri that feels right to me* is a 14" BDC. You *could* find a way to conceal one, if you worked at it.

John

*And by "right", I guess I mean has that powerful, able to hit like an edged sledgehammer, feeling- all while being fairly light and well balanced.

Keramshee is the name given by Dan Koster for HI kerambit - sort of a cross between a traditional (Malay/Indo) kerambit & a hanshee khukri

Hey thanks guys. I just checked out Leatherface's site and saw that it may be about half as cheap as I anticipated so we'll see where that goes. :D

Ah I see... I'll have to do some more searches on the Keramshee. Already have been looking at the kerambits, and some of 'em look pretty nasty. :D

Spectre... Dang. One of those exact khuks you mentioned (14" BDC) is in the DOTD RIGHT NOW, and I unfortunately can't purchase it right this minute. Actually I won't be purchasing any khuks for about another month at least, and hopefully it will all be clear in my mind by then.

Any more suggestions, guys?

leatherface is a great guy... im sure he would be glad to take care of your sheath needs :)

anymore suggestions?... hmmm, i think a YCS karda would also make a good concealed carry knife :D

I made a quick n dirty sheath for my large YCS karda from said YCS rig the other day. It's about as big of a knife as i would want to CC just due to the size and weight. That said, I like the kerambit for SD carry followed closely by the Rusty SD. What the knife lacks in punch it makes up for in weight and stealth;)

you can concealed carry full sized khuks, but be prepared to get some weeeeeeeeeeeeird looks from anyone who see's it on you.

the only way to really carry one without being noticed is inside the belt, under the shirt tilted across your abdomen. to do this, you have to be wearing baggy pants, and a long shirt or jacket over it.

I used to do that to transport them back and forth between houses in order to not be carrying a large blade on the street in plain site. if you modified the sheath a little, you could do it daily, but it wouldnt really be comfortable.

obviously the facata is not concealed in that image, but you can see wher eif you tilt it upwards, put it inside the waist band, and cover it with the shirt - you can walk around fairly comfortably with it.

"is that a khuk in your pants or are you happy to see me?"

prepare for puns like that :foot:
