First Knife for a 10 year old

Man it disgusts me that we should even be debating this!!! I'm only 25 and don't consider myself a part of some "yester year, good old days, long passed by" generation. I recieved my first firearm when I was about 7 years old...properly used under competent adult supervision of course. My first knife was probably shortly before that it was a small remington folder, and my first fixed blade (a Case) I recieved probably around the age of 10. A knife (or firearm for that matter) isn't some mystery weapon only to be presented at age 21!!! It's a tool that every person should grow up with, knowing how to use and take care of. We as a society need to leave the politics and the Knee Jerk reactions to the bunch of Pansy A$$holes in washington and start raising our kids the way most of us were raise; in the real world with some friggin common sense. I'm frankly surprised at some of this bullsh1t about a 10yr old being too young to have a knife, especially around here. If the kid is responsible and mature, get him a knife and teach him how to use it responsibly.

Evidenced by all of the sheeple posts that are abounding here, not all of the people out there think like that, and are very afraid for their children to be around knives or guns. I personally think that ten is a great age, hell, even 7 or 8 is okay, for a little knife, like the ones I mentioned above. Again, some people don't think that way.

Another vote for a Victorinox SAK -- one that's not too goobered up with so many tools that it's hard to pocket. Go with the Soldier or Tinker.

I got my first real knife at 10. It was a sign that my father trusted me and believed I was responsible enough to use and carry a knife. It wasd a small but important step toward manhood.

I gave my son his first knife at 10. I got him a Boy Scout knife, but a SAK would have been just as good if not better. I know he was responsible enough to have a knife at that age -- and he has proved I was right. Now, at age 13, collects knives and is proficient with a balisong. Sure he cuts himself now and then -- so do I -- but he has never done anything irresponsible with a knife. He knows better.

Having said this, I don't believe that there's a "magic age" for getting your first knife. I believe Brownshoe had reason to believe his kids were ready at 7 -- I believe it because I've encountered kids who reach that maturity sooner. I also think some kids aren't ready for a knife until they're about 40, or maybe never! ;)

My first knife was a Vic Camper which I still have today. I recommend the following (in no particular order):

Vic Soldier
Vic Farmer
Vic Tinker
Vic Hiker

I'm a big fan of SAK's with saws or phillips screw drivers (both are very useful). The Alox handled models are pretty cool.

i think a child is still too young to cary a knife of any sort... maybe on his/her latter years like late highschool or college that he/she should have a knife.

i had my first folder (just an imitation - not original) when i was in highschool. i just bought my first genuine sak a couple of days ago :) - btw, i just graduated college a few months ago... hehe

I recently gave my 7 year old daughter her first pocket knife, a SAK esquire. I kept the blade dull for the first month, made sure she understood how to handle it and was using it carefuly and correctly, then when she asked to have it sharpened last week we talked about it and I sharpened it. She uses it often and appreciates the utility, but it does not go to school.
