first knife out of a file did I screw up

I am looking at getting a large bean or coffee can and I have a 5 gallon metal bucket. I will try packing dirt in the larger bucket around and under the coffee can to insulate. I will use the torch for heat source being it should be plenty hot once insulated, I would think. I stay way away from anything galvanized you are right on that stuff will kill you. I will diffently keep my eyes open for some pipe been looking seeing pipe was mentioned earlier but havn't seen any yet. The great thing about me trying to make this knife here is If I can do here it should be way less work at home. I think has been a very good test to see if it was a just a fad or for real. I most say I will be doing more it is very enjoyable.I think any hobby worth doing should be challanging. Thanks for the advice I am learning a lot from both you all and this hunk of steel. I have made mistakes along the way in this build that I dont plan to repeat.

Ok well I finally got a round to trying to heat treat the knifes again. I heated it up in a grill and it worked kinda. I got it plenty hot to non magnetic. However due to not having thought it out very well I need help for the quench. My help arrived a hour later and the blades were cooled. I just dunked em to cool them blade first , The blades look lika a rockig chair wow did it bend. I gave them to a guy who wanted them. I have learned a lot out of this experene. I hope to apply what I learned again soon. Thanks to all of you for your help.

I wouldnt say it didnt pan out. I had lots of fun and occupied my time till I left. I learned a lot from it so the blades were not a total loss. If I hadnt been leaving I may have took more time to see how it came out. I will be trying again this time with better resouces.I cant wait to try again after what I learned it should be a lot better looking blades from here on out.

You should be able to turn out something good once you get home and have a little more to work with. I hope to see/hear about your future projects on here. At any rate, I hope you have a happy homecoming.
