First Knife Project...

You'll find that 90% of knifemaking is learning to fix your mistakes! :D I've made many a hunter/EDC out of a bowie/camper. :D

You can get some pretty inexpensive and good lighting by using those aluminum cone clip-on shop lights. I usually put bright, cheap floods in them and have good luck over my grinder with them.

Good luck, and you'll find a way to pull out this knife if you want to. One of the old adages about filework is that the best filework was invented to cover up mistakes! ;) I've found that idea works for lots of things. Not so long ago this forum helped me figure out how to eliminate a gap between a scale and a bolster. There are ways. Hang in there!

+1 on the clip on lights. I'm using a 2x72 grizzly and i've got a light clipped directly to the grinder upright. It shines directly down onto my work.

I took a $19 HF double halogen work light thingy, took the stand off and bolted the lights above my grinder where they aim on each side of the grinder. It does remind you to wear a hat ;)
