First Look: Kershaw Camp 10, 14, & 18

Make it heavier and give it a two hand handle

This is cool, maybe this could be the Camp 24, but I think the 18 should stay a one handed design, maybe with a slightly bigger handle then the others so it could be used as a 1 1/2 hand handle if needed.

This sums up my feelings exactly

Funny, to me I think it will be worse. Its more about where the weight is rather than just having more of it. The more you have out farther and the less is close in the better the swing and momentum for its size. Energy is linear with weight and the square of speed. Having good weight distribution means better swing speed, which gets you more energy in the cut than more weight would. And done properly the strength difference can be inconsequential. THink about it, which is better as a chopper a knife or an axe... the difference is weight distribution. :)

I wouldn't buy it without improving the weight dsitrubution over a solid blade. I've swung a machete more hours than I care to think about, and anything that makes it more effective is what I want.

As far as i can tell from the pictures, the 14 is the only one that's going to interest me. That will depend completely on the price point though, as the steel is middling. I was going to buy a Condor Warlock, but now i'm waiting to see what these are going to cost, and what kind of sheath they'll come with

If they come with kydex, and don't cost an arm and a leg, i'll be getting this instead of the wizard

Oh my goodness.

Let's see. It's Friday night, so the kids will stay up late, but they should be in bed by 11:00 or so, give them half an hour to fall asleep... 11:30 I'm busting up their piggy banks to see what I can scrape together for the new toys from Thomas. :devilish:

I like the looks of all of them, but that 14 is calling my name..

buy me

buy me..

buy me...

buyyyy me.....

:D

I was looking at a cs kuhkri machete but the camp ten looks awesome!

I'm pretty excited as to how these will turn out. Even if they are made of 8CR13MOV like most of Kershaw's imported offerings they should prove to be more than adequete. Kershaw is in the right dabbling in the fixed blade world. IMO Kershaw is capable of producing some very underated fixed blades (such as the Outcast and their skinners).

Hi folks -

I had the opportunity to handle these blades at Blade - Jim gave me the walk-around on these.

The handle is the best I have felt on a machete. There is a nice "nubby" rubber overmold, and the ergonomics of the handle nail it for me.

There is a nice "birds head" that keeps the handle from sliding out of your hand, and the material of the overmold seems as though it would be great even wet and with gloves on etc.

I think these will be popular choppers.

Sweet mother. . .

The 10 is definitely a tool (reminds me of the of the dico'ed TOPS DART which I also liked) but the "Chinese Dao-style" of the 14's blade could definitely work for zombie duties.

All I want now is to hear what the MSRP is and get a look at the sheaths and then when they are coming out so I'll know how long I have to save up for them.

I'm thinking these Camp series knives are going to be excellent "economical choppers". I want the camp 10 and 18 the most. I'm so glad to see that Kershaw is developing prototypes without the silly lightening holes!

Ok, I'm now officially very excited about these. Can't wait to get either a 10 or 14, but choosing which may be impossible...

I hope they have the same sheaths like the Outcast. It was a really good sheath

Guys - Just a little info on the Camp 10, 14. and 18:

  • The sheath for the camp 10 will a very cool molded plastic sheath with a nylon belt strap attachment. We would like to do the same thing for the Camp 14 and Camp 18, but we have not yet finalized these sheaths, and there may need to be changes due to the length of their blades.
  • The steel for all of these knives will be 65MN, which is the same as 1065 carbon steel. This is a great working steel for the kind of jobs these knives will perform.
  • We will continue testing the Camp 18 to determine whether we will make it with or without the lightening slots in the blade. There have been some that expressed the opinion that the slots will weaken the blade, but we will bear it out with testing. Nonetheless, feel free to give your opinions on the slots as to whether or not you like them. We always like to hear what our customers think.

All of my buddies so far have preferred the fuller / groove. They, of course, haven't held it, but they felt that the grooves would get gunk in them and they didn't like the look of the grooves nearly as much as the fuller look.

I myself prefer the fuller look too, but I'll reserve judgment until I handle them in person :)
