First Modern Knife?

Thanks. Blade length I like is 3", give or take a little.
gotcha. Sprint is 3.25", 113 pro trx is 3", 110 pro trx is 3.75". so maybe take look at 112 pro trx and sprint...see if ya like those. I own them all. all are american made and good quality knives.

lots of brands and choices out there though...take your time...

Thanks, will do. Gonna spend a lot of time in this general forum to see what everyone is carrying.

Since Taiwan is acceptable, Cold Steel has several great folding knife options within, or very near to, your price range. For example, the Voyager, Air Lite, Recon 1, and American Lawman are at the top of my list.

For American, the Kershaw Blur is a generally excellent knife and the basic model comes in 14C28N. It does have thumb studs but also has a spring assist to make opening easier, if you're into that sort of thing.

The Spyderco Delica, Endura, et al, are also great options.

Also what will you do with the knife?

There are things like a cold steel tuff lite that cost no money 2 inch wharncliffe that is just designed right for utility tasks.
Everyday cutting tasks--opening packages, cutting rope and twine, maybe even slicing sausage or cheese. But two inches is smaller than I would like. And not a wharncliff. Clip, stiletto-type spear, or maybe a tanto. Something that locks securely.

Lots of good suggestions. What has interested me the most so far. is the Kershaw Launch stiletto. I like the idea of pushing a button rather than operating a thumb stud, mostly because of my arthritic hands. I may end up buying two or three knives. And then I will stop....

Lots of models. I love the look of the Kershaw Launch 8 Stiletto.

Don't hesitate. I just got the Launch 15, similar, but a little rounder, and I love it.

The KLs hit way above their weight class. I buy mine from the kershawguy, he has 9 different Launch 8 in stock, including factory seconds, from $80 (factory 2nd) to $150 (damascus).

That's a beaut!

I wrote down various knives under 100 usd (most of them around 50 usd) that I could think of, so you can get ideas and come across similar brands and models.

If at all possible, you should go to a brick & mortar store that has at least a couple hundred knives. Hold the interesting ones in your hands, open and close them, consider how they feel in a grip you would use for cutting, and check how they fit in your pocket or whatever you would carry them in.

My first good modern knife is the Benchmade Mini-Barrage. It is assisted opening using a thumb stud (not an auto), so the blade flies out, and the blade is just shy of 3". I gave mine to my brother, and I'm not up on the current price, steels available, etc. Check it out on the BM site.

Also, there are quite a few customization sites/guys that do a wide variety of custom scales for Benchmades (titanium, colored, milled, etc.). They mainly do scales for the Bugout and Bugout Mini, the two most popular BM knives (these are also good choices for you), but I've seen a couple do scales for the Barrage/Mini Barrage.

Button locks are super in right now.

Now if you are interested in OTFs with 2" blades (they are legal in Cali), I have a few and can talk all day about them. TL;DR: the H&K Micro-incursion (they are made by Hogue) is fantastic for 100 Bucs and change. It is snappy AF.

You would probably want the regular sized one, if it is legal there. I own a few Microtech's that are $400 or more and the Micro-Incursion is as snappy if not more so then those, and they are the gold standard in OTFs (Gavin Hawk's OTFs are Platinum).

Thanks. We can carry just about any size knife here in Texas currently.

Then my job here is done. 😇 Best of luck. I have photos of OTFs if you want. I carry my OTFs in my 5th pocket. They are super handy for cutting boxes, etc. or just shocking the sheeple.
