First pistol?

Actually, the shock and blood-loss from a bullet plowing into tissue and/or bone is what kills people.
Hahaha, I like that! My advice is, go to a gun show and put a few in your hand and see which one you like the best. As long as you stick with - Glock, Sig Saur, S&W, H&K, Ruger, Khar, Kel Tech, Kimber, FN Herstal, Springfield, Beretta etc. you can't go wrong. Stay away from "Saturday Night Specials" (off brand guns). I think for an end of the world gun I would go with a polymer frame like Glock or H&k. Both hold up extremely well to salt water and other corrosives. Cost of a decent pistol runs from $450 to $5,000. Just decide how much you want to spend and go from there.

an alternative to the excellent handgun replies, (1) 21inch Remington 870 12ga., with screw in chokes, side saddle to give choice of ammunition , LED rifle light. (2) Marlin 1895, Winchester 1892 trapper model lever rifle with legal 14-16 inch barrel in .357mag. regards Les

Looking to buy something for self defense. In case of extreme emergencies only. I live in a big city where if something unexpected like riots/earthquake occurred, I could see the remote possibility of neededing a firearm for self defense. My GF is creeped out by guns however (makes sense since they kill people easily), so this would be something kept in a locked box. Not looking to defend against break ins, looking for more of an extreme situation side arm. Not looking to spend a lot, I have shot glocks a few times in the past, found them to be not super accurate but easy to use.

Can anyone recommend anything, and let me know how much I should expect to pay? Thanks!

My recommendation is get a shotgun. MUCH less training required (a shotgun points naturally, you have to aim a pistol at distances beyond a few yards). Plus a shotgun is less likely to penetrate walls if you are using it for self defense.

About keeping the gun away from your girlfriend: you may want to take her shooting with you even if she won't use it for self defense. A gun can be very fun to shoot and I am very thankful of my parents raising me around guns because of the respect I have for them. I know what a gun is, I know how almost all firearm mechanisms work, and I can handle a loaded gun with complete safety because of that knowledge. I would hesitate to have a gun in a house where people lived that did not know how to safely handle, unload, and use it properly.

That all aside, if you get a shotgun, go for a Remington 870 (you can also hunt with it, but that's another topic). If you want a revolver, I'd recommend a .357 magnum. The Ruger Security Six is a nice one, so is almost any S&W. If you want an autoloader, I'd go with a S&W M&P in .40 caliber. Good luck and have a safe fun time.

The GP100 and a Marlin lever action (.357) would be a great combo. Always nice to have a rifle/sidearm that chamber the same rounds. Frangible rounds are available if over-penetration is a concern.

I second that. There is also many types of ammo for better preference in the rifle. Such as the LeverRevolution rounds for lever and then the Buffalo Bore. Then beside being able to use same ammo you can select the right "tool" for the job. Also look into the Snake shot. I just think its nice to have on hand for snakes and such.

I live in SF also, and was under the impression that concealed carry is not allowed here, regardless of permit.

EDIT** I might be jumping the gun (har har), but I assumed concealed carry was the objective since you are asking about a hand gun.

X in 415... if anything ever brings you to Fresno, send me an email. You'll get a knife show and either a BBQ or home cooked fried rice and your choice of beer.

Second the 870 Remington shotgun recommendation, it's cheaper to purchase and more useful in most home defense situations. If you have to own the handgun I'd personally get the XD full size .45.

A 14 or 16 inch lever action carbine was one of those alternatives suggested by Jeff Cooper many years ago for those living in areas where concealed carry was not sanctioned. After all John Wayne used a "cowboy gun" and how much more political correct can that be. I picked up one for a trip to Texas before they had reciprocity with Fla on the carry laws. Winchester had quit chambering in .357 so I got a 30-30.... not fun to shoot. They have returned to making them in .357. A Marlin 95 or Win 92 would be my first choice. A question for you guys living in California.... are the Remington pump action rifles chambered in 5.56/223 that accept a 30rd mag legal? regards Les

I've never owned a handgun and never will. Even in combat.

Who needs a handgun when you have a four and a half foot neon green dildo?

Very solid advice, many people seem to collect all sorts of calibers and end up stocking up on five or six different sizes just to keep everything they own supplied. Keeping it simple is the best policy in my books...but then I go and look at what I have and I realize that I'm that guy who has to go and get five or six different sizes.

I suggest a CZ 75 or any variant thereof.

Without getting into it a CZ is a great handgun and an excellent way to start into the world of guns, but there are better options out there for the price.

I assume you talked to one (or more) of the 30+ approx women who have "known" me in a biblical sense? Don't let the legend get in the way of the truth... I swear it gets bigger every time my lightsaber is discussed. Mrs. CM will tell you the "lightsaber" is more like a half foot.

As far as the CZ... G. Gordon Liddy always spoke well of the Czech handguns.

CZ does make a nice pistol, but once again it doesn't make a damn bit of difference if it doesn't fit. Go to a show or store and try LOTS. Jerry Miculek is a better combat pistol shooter (by miles) than anyone on this thread, but his endorsement of a Smith and Wesson N-Frame means nothing if it's too big for your hand. Once again, it has to be right for YOU---don't listen to the particular-brand fanboys; they mean well, but they don't know how things fit in your hand. Can you LEARN to shoot one that doesn't fit? Yes--but it's a dumb handicap to start out with when you can avoid it with a little comparison shopping.

^ ... real talk...

You are the weapon.

The Beretta model 92FS is what the U.S. Military uses except they call it an M9........same gun . Its a 9 mm 15 round magazine fed semi auto that is reliable, low recoil, and easy to shoot and disassemble/clean.Also very popular with local state and federal law enforcement. Around $450-500 black,$600 stainless steel

I also know Glocks to be quite accurate. Glock 19 is my favorite closely followed by G26 and G30
