Hey guys and gals! Just introducing myself to the forum! I live up in Oregon and have been a member of NW Firearms for about 3 years not but just now getting into serious knives so thought I would check Blade Forums out. I have owned lots of Benchmade, Zero Tolerance and Kershaw, and Gerber (again I'm in Oregon so we are spoiled, I can drive to all 3 in about 20 minutes!) but just got this for Christmas! It's a Hinderer XM-18 3.5" with the spear point grind. Wow what a great knife. But now I want a Sebenza and I am sure it will tumble out of control from there!!

I just grabbed my first Hinderer after being on the fence for years.
Shouldn't have waited so long. ;)

Thank you! My question is now I see a bunch of videos on how to make them "flip" better and to take them apart and reoil them or that they over tighten the pivot screws at the factory and just need to be set up correctly. I would think that a famous knife maker would know how to set them up and they are that way for a reason... I think I may just leave it as Rick would have sent it, would you agree?

Congratulations on the Hinderer, and welcome to the Forums.

You are correct, it will spiral out of control for many.

Nice knife you have there, and thanks for the nice pictures; pictures are good!

best

Congrats, welcome and nice knife. I warn you that the sebenza and hinderer are two different animals both excellent in their own right.

Some folks like their hinderers set up differently than old Rick originally intends. Also, there is some deviation depending on which employee tuned it before it shipped. It's a personal preference thing. But I warn you, some folks get kinda antsy if you don't agree with their opinion lol. Others may like a different food safe oil if they use for food prep and so on.

I agree with you there. I went with the XM due to the fact I felt the Sebenza was to pretty to be a user lol. I don't mind using the XM but think that will help me appreciate the Sebenza more if that makes sense. My Hinderer was set up by Ben. I just want to make sure I don't mess it up if I take it apart. I'm great at disassembling guns. Never tried a knife as living so close to the makers, I would just take it in.

It's easy.

I have owned an xm (2 actually) but they just not for me. Great tools but not the tool I need. I, however, would never be without my sebenzas (or mnandi).

I live in Woodburn OR so if you need help taking it apart hit me up and I can help out. Every few months I need to take mine apart to clean and relube. I also have a wicked edge so I can touch up your edge when the time comes. Also im a gun nut so we can shoot too.

Beer man that is awesome thank you! I am up in Tigard so not far at all. I also love beer (again Oregon guys are spoiled with that). Are you on NW Firearms too?

My Eklipse came to me (preowned) with PB washers installed. I'm not sure if that was the original equipment thinking that Hinderer uses teflon??
I ordered a bunch of Hinderer anodized parts and while I was on their site I grabbed a bunch of teflon washers.
Incredible improvement (and even centered the blade perfectly that was off center with the PB washers) as far as how smooth it opens now but I did have to wait for them to break in a little.
It's not a flipper that "fires" out and I know that's not the design. It has its own smooth action that glides open with just a small movement coming out of the pocket.
If I want something that fires I'll grab one of my autos.

Welcome to the forum! Take a seat, kick back, and enjoy the show:)

Since you're worried about beating up a Sebenza, I'll tell you what...Buy yourself one, beat it up, and if you're not happy with it I'll send you a 6-pack of local IL brews:D:p

CRK's can take a beating...ask me how I know:D;)

There are so many options with the Sebenza! Umnumzaan, Small and Large 21, and then the 25! Looks like you have used those! Ever sent them in for a spa day?

I've never sent them in for a spa treatment. I do all my own sharpening, and could care less about some scratches:)

In short:

The Umnumzaan, Sebenza 25, and Inkosi all have a similar setup. They all have no pivot bushing and rely on loctite (not a bad thing), the 25 and Inkosi feature the "large hollow grind technology", all 3 have a ceramic lockface which is similar to a steel insert (but not the same) and is replaceable. The Umnumzaan is different in that the thumbstuds are your blade stop.

The 21's have no ceramic lockface and rather, it is carbidized. They feature a pivot bushing (a beautiful thing), no large hollow grind, require no loctite, have 2 blade shapes (insingo or drop point), and have way more CGG's to choose from (and Damascus too).

Get a 21 and a 'Zaan:D;):p We'll be here to support your habits:thumbup:

That's kind of what I was thinking! Thank you for the lesson. What's your preference in blade shape between Insingo and Drop point? I always lean towards drop point but I like a little diversity! I told my wife about Blade Forums and she said "oh no" and chuckled nervously! Lol
