First Run of BK62's to Be Released

Question for you guys in the know, would using boiled linseed oil on the handle be a bad idea if this knife were to be used for food prep?

From what I hear tell, mineral oil is good for food contact on wood material, handles, cutting boards, etc., AKA board oil, maybe a few other names.

BLO is slow to dry, but works great on wooden tool handles, hammers, axes.

it's not 240 grit, but it's not bad. little chatter on some of the end grain, but to be expected.

still feels cool from the box, almost a little like it's not completely dry, perhaps that's the light BLO like smell?

But definitely not an Ontario, or Chicago Cutlery?
I hope.....?

"Is it too early to ask this; I’ve been here for the BK98 and now the BK62, what’s next?" :D
Thanksgiving!! :D

I was fearful that I'ld missed the early bunch, and sprang for one from Knife Center, it's been shipped from Richmond, Va. already! So, I got two en route.

if you use BLO that is 100% natural, and doesn't have heavy metal drying catalysts... sure.

pure tung oil should be food safe. as would be walnut oil. just don't have nut allergies

could also for sanitary purposes use spar varnish and/or poly urethane - seal the wood completely and keeps the wood from soaking up nasty stuff. stabilized would be better. or other materials.

Thank you, Bladite.

I do have mineral oil, but, would prefer something that dries and isn’t oily.
You could try tung oil, I've used it on other knife scales, it dries like varnish if you use enough coats. I usually give it 24 hours to skin over real good. I have used them for food as well, and I ain't quite dead yet.
But We should make a separate post how Awesome Barbara is!..... :)

Thank you for your patronage

Enjoy your new knife

Pedantic point but the BLO doesn’t dry. It polymerizes. To really let it cure should take a few days in dry room temp environments. I agree with everything else you say though.

I’ve used it on a bunch of projects over the years and when it cures/polymerizes, it’s not oily at all. It actually is a wonderful way to finish wood if done right.

I really like to do multiple sessions of wet sanding with a blend of BLO and mineral spirits. The MS thins out the BLO so it can really penetrate deep into the wood for a good sealing in the initial application, so i like to start with about 4:1 ratio of MS to BLO. After that I start increasing the concentration of BLO with successive wet sandings (along with using progressively finer sandpaper). It’s a whole process but gets fantastic results. Beautiful, extraordinarily durable, and easy to touch up as needed.

I’ll post pics tomorrow of some results I’ve gotten.

given how thin these slabs are, a zip lock bag of "appropriate oil and mineral spirits", squeeze out the air, and let soak for a few days, should ensure complete penetration... then let it polymerize and bob's your uncle :D

Mine will be here tomorrow. I'll Google some more original Kephart sheaths or some up with an original. I'll post pics Friday night or Saturday morning. I check my tracking number a couple times a day, the notification I received was for a Buck Yellowjacket. I though it was for the 62.

Mine landed in St. Louis this morning, and is en route here. That's only an hour and a half away. Scheduled for tomorrow, but hoping to have a package waiting for me when I get home.
