First sheath of 2015

Love that one sir
Only thing I see is the left slot is a bit close to the stitches

I'll need to save some funds up for one of those !

Here's a shot with the knife out of the sheath. This is my Compadre model, AEB-L and 5 7/8" oal. Brass bolster and Ironwood handle on this one. I'm pretty darn happy with this sheath. I really only spot one oops. In fact its one of my personal peeve things I check often, bothers my OCD. But it happened. Do you see it??

Thanks Gary and Ken. No Gary thats not what I'm thinking of. Although I know what you're saying, thats a calculated risk so to speak. This design always has several things working against itself that I as the maker try to balance as much as possible. One is its size. I try to keep it as compact as possible and so that cuts down on room for the slots. The slots have to be as far a part as possible. The further they are a part the more horizontal the sheath rides which is desired by the vast majority. Then the slots have to be as parrallel as possible, otherwise you get a wowie or a bump in the belt underneath the sheath that you can't work out, not very comfortable. So the slot placement while not perfect in an ideal world, was on purpose, so not the oops. So lets see if Strig sees it cause I told him about this long time ago.

Those slots have caused me to say many !@#$% things like that in the past. I can't tell you how many times I've actually cut the stitching. Enough times that when I do that I don't even throw the sheath across the room anymore before I throw it away. Been some time since I've done that now. Keeping them as far a part as possible and parrallel has caused much anguish. I did put one blade through the front of the sheath in this batch when wet molding. Have to remake that one. Been a while since I've done that too. Missed my hand but I havn't always missed either.

Ya got me, I've got OCD pretty bad myself, but I don't see anything else that would make me go 'ohoh' on that sheath, looks pretty nice sir and love that knife too, handle shape, guard area and blade size all come together into a nice edc blade right there.

I'd do the leather braid fob a little different myself, but then, that's me ;)

Thank you Gary! That knife is a nice little package. I may have to make one for myself someday too. Pretty darn good for working on calves in the branding pen. Perfect blade for ear marking. Feels real good in the hand. I try to keep the leather string pretty simple. Lots of guys dress em up later. I've seen em done with bits of antler and bone woven in. But I do two blood knots and call it good. Most of my customers absolutely demand that string. Have a girl helping me in the shop a few hours every week, she did all the strings on this batch and got em about right, did a pretty darn good job. I had her clean up the shop and talk about OCD, I'm afraid to open the drawers in my tool chest, I might move something out of its specified place!

Dave, I love your mistakes:) If I had to be that precise I only see little difference in backstitch at the upper stitch, and one little probably fingernail scratch at middle

Yep it was the back stitch. 2 to start with and finished with 3. Drives me nuts when I do that. Should be two and two or three and three. Yep there is a little mark there in the center, I had to go look at the sheath. Finger nail perhaps, life for sure. Quien Sabe?

I 'never' would have put that down as an issue, of course it's not anything that will hurt the performance of that sheath, but I can see where it can give you OCD problems, I guess I'm glad that there are folks with worse OCD issues than me ;)

Only came across this thread now. Must say Gary, you are a master of leather beautiful work.

My first sheath of 2015 is only my second ever.

I'm not sure why the dye came out mottled. I was going to give it a second coat but decided that I kind of liked the look of it. I learned a lot doing this one, hopefully the next one will be better.

There can be a couple of reasons for mottling on the dye. If you used a dauber one reason is dwell, you hold the dauber in one place a split second longer. Another is how saturated the dauber is . Try a disposable foamy brush I get a much more even coat that way.

Is that a Mule? I see a Perrin in the background. :)

I like the mottled look personally. Daubed, streaky, two tone, it all looks more interesting to me than an even coat. I suppose damascus, figured/burl wood, multi-colored g10, and the like are popular and for the same reason. An even coat is an art all itself though!

Thanks for the advice on the foam brush, I'll give that a try next time.
Yup, that's a one of the M4 mules, good eye on the Perrin. It or the Kumo will probably be my next sheath project.
