Okay so here is the deal, I've been into knives for as long as I can remember, I've got a buck alpha hunter which I find is way to big for a EDC knife, I'm really impressed by the Spyderco knives and I like the wave action that I see on youtube. Most of the time I like a quick draw knife so I'm leaning that way. My gf is not very happy with my knife obsession but I think she's getting used to it. I am basically looking for a Tactical folding knife. I like these knives and they are on my list for collection if not EDC
-Delica 4 wave
-Volpe
-P'kal-
-Flight G-10~BY05G
-Manix C95.
These are in no particular order. This is the never ending battle for a EDC knife and I was wondering if someone could point out good vs bad for these knives and the options that come with them.

I'm really looking forward to ordering but I want to make the bets choice possible. The big parts I look for in a knife are durability, edge retention and a compact size. Any advice would be kickass!

Welcome to the forum :)

Lots has been written about all the knives in your list but given your requrements I would suggest the delica it will meet & exceed what you want it for

" The big parts I look for in a knife are durability, edge retention and a compact size."

I noticed your from Canada & I know the knife laws are different than here in the US so you may not want to choose the waved delica check it out first.

I know I like the ZDP-189 delicas myself there are a few variations of them with different handle colors etc.

I am sure others will give you their opinons as well this is just my 2 cents.

Good luck with your first Spydie.

Welcome to the forum :)

Thanks I look forward to learning and sharing what I know as I find my groove ;)

Good luck with your first Spydie

Thanks I'm really excited to get one :D I hear lots of good things about spydies and I like the look of them. I will look up the laws, I don't think there is anything as of yet but I am sure as more of them catch on the pencil pushers will come up with some. I do know however when I get comfortable with a blade (not to comfortable mind you) I can open it fast enough wave or no wave. I just like the concept.

Thanks for your 2 cents George.

Congrats on your choice of a new Spydie. I am sure it will develop into a life long friendship. :)

As for the 'Wave' models in Canada, they are perfectly legal.

Welcome to the forums and enjoy your stay her :) My sons visited your beautiful area (one in 2003 and one this year), unfortunately I never stayed in Canada.

You made a nice list of Spydies. I would advise you to include the Caly 3 in your list ;)

Or shorten the whole matter and buy a Caly 3 :)

the fully serrated delica 4 is one of the best all around knives.

the waved version is real nice, however im not a big fan of the wave and i like fully serrated spydercos so i prefer the normal d4.

the spyderco native is also a compact knife that is very well designed.

the only knife in you list i have experience wit is the delica 4 and it is an awsome knife one of the sharpest out of the box i have ever gotten and has excellent edge retention, which is awsome because my sharpmaker is out of action because my little sister snapped one of the fine stones in half:mad: and my replacement is on backorder:(. Anyway good luck with your new spydie.

Great choice! Did you end up going with the Wave or not? I've got the waved version and I love it, but I'd like a non waved one too, and a few other Spydies as well. Enjoy!

P'kal is THE best if you want fast deployment.
Manix is the best for being just plain tough.
But I'd suggest buying them all(eventually).
Delica 4 Wave is good if you want fast deployment without looking too weaponish.

I just ordered a Delica 4. Can't wait to get my hands on it :D
Thanks for the advice guys!

My guess is that once you get that Delica (my first spydie also :D) you'll be so impressed that you'll add the rest of your list to the collection in short order!! Welcome to the forums and to the world of Spyderco. You'd better hide your wallet;)!

hey downingtown, i'm from the willow grove area!

OP, the Delica is a mainstay of the Spyderco line. It's sturdy, affordable, cool looking, and works great. If I could do it all again, I'd get the fully serrated version.

You will be comfortable carrying this every day, as opposed to the MUCH larger Manix. The Pkal is a specialty sort of knife. Made for SD and a little less practical for EDC than some others. (not because you can't, but because of the design).

Hi, This is my first post as well!!
I just ordered the Delica 4 plain edge FRN and it should be here tomorrow! This forum has been a big part of why I chose that particular model for my first Spydie. I also think that I'll be picking up a few more in the coming months, hopefully a Caly3 and maybe a Millie or Native? also I can't wait to see the Kevin Wilkins Collab knife (Leafstorm). So thanks for the spydie Knowledge, you have all been very helpful.
Roof top eagle, you might want to bypass Customs and try a couple of Canadian suppliers for your Spyderco needs, I ordered mine from S + R Knives in Etibicoke www.srknives.com they were super helpful and had reasonable pricing and had my shipment out the same day. Also check out the Canadian thread under community they have a bunch of info on CDN suppliers.
The CDN suppliers also carry a bunch of different sharpener options as well, that little sharpener you got from Crappytire looks like you'll be losing more skin then sharpening your blade. MEC has some nice sharpening options too, they'll even give you a demo on how to use them properly. Though they did sell me a Gerber LST (yuck).
So anyways thanks again all for the info and maybe I'll put in my 2 cents when my new toy gets here as well.
Cheers

Got a package in the mail today!!! It's Delica time!!
What a sweet little knife, very light and thin, yet sturdy and razor sharp. I ordered it after doing a bunch of research in this forum and on the Spyderco forum, and it's just great to finally have a quality knife. It feels good in my hand and has really well thought out ergonomics. I never got a chance to even hold one before ordering it, but after reading numerous descriptions here it is everything I could want in an EDC (well at least for now $$$, until I can decide on another spydie).
Thanks to everyone who replied to numerous people about the Delica 4, a great EDC for Newbies (or anyone) and also folks who are unfamiliar with Spyderco products.
It's a +1 for Delica 4 for me anyways.
Cheers, :D
