First Survive! Knife

Alright so I'm gonna talk to myself on here for a while and enjoy my own company :D

I may have figured out as to why my GSO 5.1 as posted is marked a 2nd and I used a Kassoy 18mm-10X magnifier (the type which diamond merchants use hanging on their necks, although I am neither a diamond merchant nor have any idea as to how exactly I came across this little magnifier!) Anyway, in the last photo presented as attachment 632872, you will notice that the V at the very tip is ever so slightly asymmetrical and we are perhaps talking maybe 1mm or so. I wonder if the others will also notice this and I will be able to verify when I get my second one ordered on 4/11.

P.S. you will see the very tip viewed directly from above looking onto one of the the Kydex sheath's lashing holes, if you know what I mean!

Anyone have a response on the question here? I can hardly see the asymmetry, and wouldn't notice it unless it's pointed out.

The finish held up VERY well, that walnut was staining and marking almost every blade that went through it. Really impressive.
The edge retention and toughness are really ideal.
The combination of the palm swell and tacky canvas micarta were easy to hang onto in the rain.

You'll love it.
Old world craftsmanship, great ergos.
The leverage you get hits like a Mack truck

It wasn't really a question, merely a rhetorical observation in nature!

Having inspected this GSO 5.1 3V which I have received very, very closely, I am quite confident that is the reason for being marked as a blemished blade which ended up on a Monday's sale. Also do not forget that what you see is almost a 20X magnification and I honestly guess (as I do not have the proper apparatus to measure) that we are talking an asymmetrical V shape at the tip of about 1 mm, if even that much! This imperfection will NOT stop me from buying other GSO models or S!K models again(what's the difference?!) if and when I come across other opportunities on future Monday's sale.

I may be preaching to the choir already but this heavy and beefy knife is scary sharp! I know that people throw that cliche around and it can be very subjective but let me give you a descriptive example:

One of my sharpest blades so far is my pocket queen SpyderCo PM II which has not cut anything but paper! This super tough GSO 5.1 with its CPM-3V went through the thinnest of phonebook papers just like that PMII. It really surprised the heck out of me that they were on par, if not better, in terms of sharpness out of the box. I will wait and see to report back on my other one still awaiting fulfillment from 4/11, which is a CPM-20CV version of the GSO 5.1.

Wait a second........ did I miss something in rcb's pics or does HK have 4.7's on the brain as bad as I do?????

Oh man, I typed that after fourteen hours behind the wheel yesterday, and had just come from the GSO 4.7 thread. Sorry, I meant the 5.1!

I didn't know if he thought he saw a 4.7 or just typed 4.7 by accident when he really meant 5.1. Either way I can totally relate.

Just yesterday I was daydreaming of the 4.7 as I was driving my 4.7. I didn't notice the 4.7 light change to red and I almost bumped into the 4.7 ahead of me. Luckily I was able to slam on my 4.7 at the last second and avoided a serious 4.7 :D

:p :D

Really would like to get my hands on a Gso 10 2nd gen,,, I'm seriously considering it

Do it! I'm definitely going to try to poach a new gen 10. Plus I'd love to see you get it in the rotation with some other steel, side by side.

I knew what you meant, but couldn't pass up an opportunity to hassle you :D

If I had a penny for every mis-type I've made I'd have enough to pay for a necker II at least!

Lol. I've got a few coming to me, hassle away brotherman :D

rcb2000, what's your take on the GB, RMJ(?) and SR in this picture comparison-wise?

It was a Wenger Hawk, very cool piece.
The GFB SFA is a great pack axe, enough length and weight to split smaller logs, but really ideal for limbing and chopping.
The Swamp Rat KDSH is a really fun blade,, bites deep, but obviously a much thinner head, so not really for splitting.
The Wenger was a GREAT smaller hawk, easy to choke up with, and nimble in the hand. I'm not too familiar with the brand but I believe its primary role is as a combat hawk,, could be wrong though.

Hey rcb were there any of Nate's field knives in the mix?
I am looking to snag one in his upcoming sale or perhaps a rmd (sr101) while i wait for my gso preorder to arrive. But i am stuck trying to decide between the two and of course i am poor enough that i can only go with one. Do you or anyone else have any advice or experience between the two :D :D?

There was one there, along with a light chopper and a shiv.
To be honest most of the attention was on the big boys, so I didn't get a chance to do anything but handle and fondle it 😬

You'll love your GSO, so good in the hand and great steel.

If I were you, I'd try for a field knife, and if you don't score head over to grab a RMD before they're gone.

I just looked through my pics, and the crazy thing is that there's knives that aren't even in the group shot!
The Carothers Field was one, also a Dogfather, a Trash 1...probably more

Okay thanks!
And fair enough, i would be all over the bigger knives too had i the chance! A variety of top notch blades you had there, i am quite jealous to say the least!

Thank you! I've got to check that Wenger out.

I saw a field knife in one of the group shots over in the other thread you guys have, along with the shiv and light chopper. Looks like NTM was well represented.

XtianAus, grab a field knife if you can, you won't regret it. I have two, and many RMDs. I like both, but there's really nothing out there that's exactly like Nathan's field knife. I like mine more and more with use.

This photo on Survive!'s IG has pretty much sold me on switching around the scales on my 3V (pics posted on here) with the 20CV which i should be receiving tomorrow. Then the 20CV with the tiger stripes and black sheath will go on sale at some point in the future since I will not be needing 2 x GSO 5.1's. I will only consider keeping the 20CV as is and selling the 3V as is if the 20CV ends up being a better 2nd (sans the tip asymmetry on my 3V) but even that may be a very tough decision to make! My other kydex sheath will be in the Earth color and having seen AZWelke's kydex's, I will be ordering one in black shortly down the road. The pics which RedWood had posted earned them my business

Ahhh that is great. Thanks!
I always liked the look of them and their insane cutting edge just the low 15degrees was a concern regarding edge chipping and fragileness etc. But it seems like that was not an issue for you then :D hopefully i can snag one friday.

I have not used mine for batoning. It is a fairly small knife, a little smaller than the RMD, and definitely smaller than a GSO 5.1, so I have used it lighter so far. Not that I have any worries about it holding up to that at all, just that the size doesn't lend itself as well to that. But no, I would definitely not describe it as fragile, and if you don't like it, you can definitely move that one in a heartbeat. Be fast my friend :)

Haha thanks i am sure going to try but hopefully they dont go as quick as the light choppers do...it is just insane how quick they sell, there is just no other word for it haha
But speaking of being quick, i have to be awake at 5am saturday morning inorder to snag one (shitty time zone difference :( ).
