First WIP thread. Two Knives ( Pic Intensive)

I might have missed it but what thickness is the steel?
It's 1/4" 5160. So, yeah, lots of filing. I suppose if I didn't taper the tang then I could notch the blade tang instead of the handle material, but it would be pretty heavy for the overall length. I'm leaning closer to putting a distal taper and resetting the bevels, though, so it's still going to lose some weight. :fat:

I very much like no.1 and do agree that it would probably look a bit more special if the blade was longer. I'm very much enjoying all the hand work you are doing. There is a huge amount of visible effort that new makers wanting to get started might learn from your pictures alone. On the other hand it encourages me to not back away when I might see some coming into my work. To see some of my work, please go to the customknifegallery.com Frank

I will go take a look. I always enjoy looking at other peoples' work. :)
[I had a gander] Wow, those are some sweet folders in your gallery. That is a great site in general. Thanks for the tip!

I'm not sure what you mean by hidden lanyard.

Like this?

I didn't realize that was .25" stock.
The only suggestion I'd make is to bring those bevels up as high as possible.

Yup, that's type of lanyard hole what I was referring to. I've pretty much decided to distal taper the blade and reset the bevels to make the blade more nimble and a better slicer.

Does anyone reading this have a good source for 5160 at thicknesses below .25" ? It seems that is how the bulk of 5160 production is made. It's been alright on these prototypes where I'm constantly changing things, but I would like to start closer to the final thickness when I get a design nailed down. I'll probably use a different steel like 52100 on developed designs. Aldo's website has plenty of sizes to choose from.

That type of lanyard hole is very neat looking.

Aldo doesn't carry 5160 in less than a 1/4"?
Maybe jantz or usaknifemaker or admiral?

Admiral has .203", only one with something other than 1/4" that I found.

Still really thick.

Well, thanks for looking, anyhow:biggrin: I got my bar from Jantz. I'll just use some different stock in the future and reserve the 5160 for big choppers and bowies.

Way to stick with the work Philipp! Just not being afraid to get dirty and tired will go a very long way!

Thanks, Ryan! I'm sorry I haven't posted In a while, but I've purchased nearly everything I need to finish: 416 ss pin stock, tru oil, heat treat foil, and components for a DIY electro etcher. Oh, and model 2 has three additional siblings now. I'll post some more photos of my progress tomorrow. The electronics should arrive on Tuesday, so I'll include the etcher build in this thread as it will contribute to the completion of these knives.

Cheers!
