Fish Scissor????

The idea behind them is that you dont have to be there to set the hook. Which may be good in a survival situation, I guess thats why they use them for ice fishing. Drop the line and walk away the spring sets the hook.

Modern hook quality and designs negate the need in many cases to "Set the hook", especially when baitfishing. Sure you might guthook the fish, but in a survival situation it doesn't matter.

In the space this thing takes up, you're beter off carrying more hooks and rigging a trotline or something similar.

I think I know what you are talking about. My father had one of these in his Tackle box when I was a kid. I believe they are used for ice fishing if I remember. I also think they are illegal here in Canada now. It is something you suspend with bait and when a fish hits it, allot like a mouse trap the jaws shut and hook the fish

Yes I remember those Monkey, and they are illegal. Using floats, trot lines, whatever, are all good ideas. However, I have chopped through 3+ feet of ice on several occassions in the bitter cold, with a hatchet. The ice is like rock and shoots back up biting your face. After multiple sessions of this a hatchet is like a butter knife. An axe sharpening file fixes that quickly though. Have a lanyard on the handle as it only takes one slip and its bye,bye to the bottom of the lake with mr. hatchet.
