Fiskars hatchet mods?

Ok, money is tight. I already own a Fiskars hatchet. Are there any mods I can do on the cheap to make it better.

Later if I can afford a better one, great. But for now.....

Pics/Vids of mods and/or the steps to the mods appreciated

It's not much, but I did some minor "tactical" modding for my hatchet:

Scraped the orange color away (it's quite easy to scrape, just takes a while). Then I put some paracord loops to the handle so that I burned the ends together. Added couple of layers of hockey tape.

I sent mine off to Siguy to have him thin it out and convex the edge and now it's a real champ. He's off on sabatical right now but I'm sure that RichardJ could do his magic on it for you and both of these guys are very inexpensive.

If you're willing to try, get some kydex and make a good sheath for it. I'm not up to that point yet, but I'm going to have someone make one for me.

I broke handle off, not a mod but I've used just the head a few times. Been meaning to send it back for warrenty just haven't got the chance. Any one else have problems with them in colder weather?

I have a bike inner tube stretched up over the handle of one of my 14 inch Fiskars.
Makes the handle "grippier", lol.
Been tempted to make an emergency kit to slip into the hollow handle, maybe some matches and/or a peanut lighter, PCB firestarter, thin ferro rod and striker maybe even a Vic Classic or Leatherman Micra and a small amount of paracord.
You could do up a kit in a long thin plastic bag and seal the ends with a twist tie or use one of those kitchen dohickeys that melt seal the seams of plastic bags. Use decent strength plastic bag material and leave enough material at the one end so you can easily grasp the bag and pull it out of the handle.
Cut some cork or wood to fit the end of the handle to act as a plug, cut the plug so that it has a hole running through it that corresponds to the handles lanyard hole.
Then run some paracord through the end and tie it off so the plug won't fall out.

The best mod is to use it! And let natural wear take over. I sped things along a little with some sandpaper, it chops a lot better with a convex edge (or as much of one as you can make by taking the shoulders off).

That, and maybe a kydex cover.

i haven't really stepped up to modding it yet either, the survival kit in the hollow handle is tempting, but I never make use of psk because all my items are on me at all times

Still I love my Fiskars axe as is and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. great value for the $

as for cold weather holds up great down to -20 degrees Celsius so far

The lansky puck is awesome for convexing axe edges, I've used one for the last 5 years. Finish it off with some high grit sandpaper.

Stop by the shop!

Leave it to John to open up his doors to me.

Maybe if I ever get some free time. I'm taking advantage of overtime at work right now since the wife got laid off, we have a 5 1/2 month old and our 8 yr old is in Cub Scouts now, hehe.

Maybe in the coming months. :o

Thanks much for the offer my friend!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but does anyone have any pictures of their kydex sheaths for the Fiskars?

I have some kydex, but have never made anything out of it and need to cover the edge on my Fiskars.
Thanks

Not a hijack in my opinion. Kydex sheath is "aftermarket" so I'd consider it a mod......PLUS I'd like to see a kydex sheath myself.

another semi- hijack, but is does the Fiskar's hatchet = the Gerber Back Paxe?- they look very (very) similar

I'd like to see a Kydex sheath as well :)

Yes, they're pretty much the same. Fiskars owns Gerber, and the Gerber pieces even have "Fiskars, Finland" marked on them.

There was a recent thread in the axe subforum on sheaths that has pics of kydex sheaths.
You might look there as well.

Here is a kydex blade cover I make for my hatchets. If you stop by I`m sure I can whip something up for yours.
