Fit and Finish - A Long Story

I had a 2009 Commander that was flawless. The only thing I've ever seen people complain about that I have personally seen is that the liners are not polished. I had a 2011 CQC-10 that I could not find a problem one with. Buy the knife you like that Emerson makes and give it a shot. If there is an issue with it they will fix it. If you just don't like it you can sell it and get what you paid out of it. I've never lost money on one even if I used it!

You want something that will take abuse? Something that easy to sharpen and holds a detent edge? Something with great ergonomics? Something with a it breaks we fix it warranty? Buy an Emerson.

no, buy a fixed blade. if you need to protect the panda express across from hot topic? buy an emerson.

Depending on where you live that may not be an option. Nothing fixed over 6 inches here by law. Best not to get caught with anything fixed. Period.

Off topic, but there are plenty of fixed-blade knives that have blades under 6 inches...
And who wants to spend $150+ on a knife and have to send it right back to the manufacturer?
I hate returning my messed-up fast-food order...much less wasting my time and money to return what is supposed to be a quality knife.

Dumb question, but is that 6 inches total or 6 inch blade length? Because I just want to point out that I've never seen an Emerson with a 6 inch blade.

Fixed 6 inches period concealed. Anything that could be interpreted as a bowie knife. Best solution is to not have a fixed blade on you unless you are camping, fishing, etc. VA is very lenient when it comes to guns and knives but they do draw a line. Cross that line and you better have a good lawyer.

Emerson Kandahar. 6" blade, 11.9" total. Just like everything in this whole thread, just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist or is not true.

To be fair though, that is a custom and there aren't any production models based off it. You wouldn't find one unless you found someone willing to part with theirs, or you got lucky at a show lottery.

The Timberline SPECWAR comes close at 5.5", someone posted a trade thread with info on it: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...rson-Timberline-SPECWAR?p=9502078#post9502078

Then you have the PUK and fixed Karambit, but those don't really come anywhere close in blade length. Then there's also the USN/skull special dagger, but again, that's not even close to 6" considering it's slightly less than 8" OAL.

To be fair it's not a custom. There are quite a few around and they were ordered direct from Emerson. I do not know if you can still order them, they are still listed for sale on his website as you can see.

It's under the ECA so it could be like the EOTAC knife.

I recomended an Emerson to a buddy of mine and he picked up a cqc 15. First impresion of the knife was what an awsome blade! Centered Sharp Solid lock up. Now its off center rubbing against the scale and blade play like you wont belive. Called emerson to send it in for work and they refused to send it back to his home address because he lives in western NY literaly as far away from NYC as possible. Needless to say we both carry millies now.

$600 bucks for one of those Emerson fixed blades (Kandahar) pictured above. I have a hard time believing a soldier thrashing that knife out in the field. But then again I havent been there
so what do I know.

That's NY's fault, glad your buddy liked the knife.

I find it hard to belive that 600$ would only get you a fully CNC cut/ground knife with some hand assembly. Even a current production XM18 at dealer markup can sell for less. It wouldn't be unreasonable to guess that the Kandahars are at least hand ground or finished, which would put them at mid-tech or semi-custom status. Sure a knife may not be a custom knife, but that doesn't necessarily make it a full-on production knife.

Yeah, blame Bloomberg for that BS.

It sounds like the pivot screw loosened up. Why on earth would anyone send it back when it only required a quarter turn of a screw? No defect there at all. Duh!

A lock face can deteriorate to the point where the pivot cannot correct bladeplay.

You hit the nail on the head there. Sounds like the pivot backed off.

Yes but from what the poster said it was not centered. So it sounds like it was simply a loose pivot screw. Tighten the screw and the blade will center. Then if it has blade play you are looking at the lock face to blade to stop pin relationship. These are very simple knives.

Sadly it is common but has the easy teflon tape fix. Some of my EKI's never had this problem some came like it out of the box. Just saying.

Like my father always told me "There is no substitute for experience", and Mr. Emerson's story speaks volumes. Thank you for the insight. For what its worth he is fixing my cqc 7b bt that a local knife shop butchered. It is one of the slickest, fastest knives I own and it deploys like nobodies business. Glad to have it.
