I work a hard manual labor job landscaping and removing trees, so I get a good bit of exercise daily throughout my work week. I'll start going on long walks and running on my treadmill for at least a half hour each day and I'll integrate some weight lifting into it. I guess I'll try to work back up to my two hours of running each day that I used to do back in high school. I could stand to loose about thirty pounds of fat and put about twenty pounds of muscle on again. After about two weeks, I'll buy some 50 lb. weights. This might just be what I need to get through it. Count me in!
I worked landscaping in AZ (among a few other outdoor jobs there, window washing and concrete), and I know exactly what type of work you're talking about. My forearms were the best they've ever been while working landscaping (I ran a hedge trimmer for 4-6 hours per day, then debris cleanup), as the job does keep you in pretty good shape. It was hard for me when I transitioned to office work, as it doesn't give the same "look at what I accomplished today" type of feedback that the landscaping/other manual labor jobs did. Took a while to adjust.
Personally though, I have given up on running. I played competitive soccer for about 15 years, did cross country in high school, etc. My knees are still ok, but I'm pre-emptively giving up on running (as a standalone exercise), I still play pickup soccer games twice a week that I don't count) just to make sure they still work by the time I hit 40

. My entries for cardio will all be cycling (mix of mountain/road). But even in High School I never ran for two hours a day, an hour straight... easily. But two hours solid of running is a LOT. As its been mentioned, ease into that, I'd hate to see anyone get hurt by ramping up too quickly.
I did 17 miles on my bike on Saturday, and played Futsal (kind of like soccer) for an hour and a half last night, and still feel horribly out of shape. When things start for this competition, I'll see if I can make the rides more than just once weekly/increase some distance (30-50 miles would be more than I've ever done, and seems feasible).
Anyway, I've also looked up the hundredpushups thing, and plan to do my "baseline" sometime this week. Then we'll see what happens.
Thanks again Falcon .
