Since camping usually involves vehicle, more knives should not be a problem, hence all round knife doesn't mean the only knife. With this set up the all round designation would be better to have 3.3"-4.2" range, I think?

Depends on what they want to do with it and how old they are, if younger I recommend the Buck 119 or 117 in basic steel or if older maybe the Pro line in S35vn, or if learning how about something from BPS, they do have the Adventurer in scandi or there are some others in s different grind.

This is interesting topic, because the only two 5"-6" range knives I have are Condor Scalper and Mora Classic 3. Whatever the camping activities are, the hunting, surviving, and tactical ones are highly improbable for me. Can somebody suggest a knife that will perform better than either the Mora or the Condor, and in what kind of tasks ?
The kransbol for food prep.
The skrama for wood processing.
The bear grills for hammering in tent pegs.(yeah I went there)

Thanks, D Drop bear , I actually meant one knife in the 5"-6" range, sure the Scallper and the Mora 3 are not the best, but my point is any all around 5"-6" knife will be inferior to either one or the other of the two knives for most of the tasks. And, you see, your three knives are not within the OP size range - I am still thinking a blade this long wouldn't be the best for such designation, it can even make some campers feeling weird walking around the campsite, like a warrior or a mountain man. The skrama is an interesting knife, thanks for letting me know of its existence!

I always just take a good hard look at what I use a knife for and lean in to that and then let the other features be a bit crap.

Even if the other features are cooler. Like survival or killing people or whatever.

Which is a very hard conscious decision on my part.

the skrama is an amazing beater knife. Which I use a lot camping. Because there is never wood at a camp site and so I generally have to buy it.

But I don't Generally have a use for a small fixed blade. A pocket knife does all my cutting and food prep. So I Generally take a swis army or something.

Having said all that I did just order an off grid grizzly kitchen? Camping knife. Because I like the romantic idea of wood fire cooking. Which is a very inefficient process considering the bulk of gear that takes.

Good assessment. I’d personally just use a Garberg in stainless and the Skrama, and skip the Grylls altogether.

Okay, I don’t do that. I brought my GB Small Forest Axe. The maul is a beast though. :)

I honestly don’t understand the fascination with processing wood with a knife.
I’ve tried little knives, big knives, goloks & machetes. Batonning, chopping yadayada.

Get the kids a mora to whittle with and an affordable axe to split firewood with. It doesn’t have to be a GB, I got mine when they were less than $70.
Now? I’d get a Fiskars at not look back.

But that’s me. Cranky ol’ practical guy :)

I have to mention the hultafors heavy duty. Which is about $10 and just a really nice knife.

A big saftey handle, almost indestructible, good size at about 4 inches.

And you get to patina it. Which is fun

😲😲

I need that Maul !!!!

The construction knives are making waves. Milwaukee, Klein, and Estwig.

'Duct Knife' They're calling it. Which is a fixed blade dagger with serrations on one side.

I'm starting to see torture videos coming out on all three. Usually camp sight work and entertainment. Like throwing.
