I agree on the slipjoints making a bit of a comeback, you can't mess with something so easy to carry. I believe the current trend is to lighter, better cutting knives and I want to push things hard in that direction... and with other niche knives like overbuilt folders.I have a few things planned that are going to be much different than what you currently see on the folder market and I think you guys will like them.

I carry larger fixed blades in my teeth, pirate style. It's like having a necker but way more convenient. People stare at me at Wal-Mart though.

:D It's like vehicles, you can have a sports car or a 4x4... a dump truck or a coupe. Deuce and a Half or a Ferrari. 4runner or WRX... Chevy, Dodge or Ford. Some do it all and some do things really well... some do it all pretty darn well. It would be nice to have them all. (pardon my awful comparisons, lol!)

But yeah... specialty knives! look out!
 
I carried my Tom Krein PSK (Blue G10/A1 tool steel) for my last 2 years of college.
Hooked to my backpack via tec-lok and I never had anyone freak out.
Given, it was a smaller school and not a rule-bound university (thank god).
I remember it coming in handy when I had to take a Stage Design course. The A1 is fantastic but I haven't carried it in a while because one-hand folders and traditonal slip joints have taken over.
DF knives are next on my fixed blade list.

I rarely carry the same knife for long.. well sort of.. Jeans or shorts? belt or non belt pants/shorts... Where will I be for the day matters... coast or mtns? Biking or hiking? Camping? Road trip...

There are currently 4 knives in my truck.. lol one DFK camp chef's knife. A Ti dagger.. 2 SAKS, a machete.. an ax.. ok for 5 knives, maybe another SAK in there too.. I have SAKs in almost every room, every drawer, garage, car and truck, and trailer... shop.. yeah.. my wife is getting sick of "KNIVES EVERYWHERE!"

My current project (besides everything) is to make a safe place for knives.. HAH...

Got another DFK frikkie on the way too.. going to make a display for the frikkies..

Just rambling.. fixed blades I carry... Bantang mini bowie, DFK tanto, Big Chris hunter, Bantang Ti EDC, Bantang EDC, Cody Handley EDC, Carter 3in EDC, and/or a Murr EDC... one of the Bantangs and the Murr are crossdraw front carry so I can carry a folder in right front pocket or another larger fixed.. the two crossdraws are 2.5in little guys that hide super duper sneaky on the sly...

Today just a Benchmade 710 with kevlar scales :D
