Fixed blade EDC?

This is nowhere near as nice as the other leather sheaths in here, but this is my solution to pocket carry for my eskabar, I tried to copy the KSF city pocket sheath. It's ugly but functional.

It's a rotation between ESEE-3, Eskabar or Izula II for me...All work very well for pocket carry or neck carry if I am in gym shorts.

The Izulas sheath is decent,...the other two I had kydex made for.

I have yet to carry a folder since switching over to fixed about three months ago.

I want to see a timed event between a fixed blade in the pocket guy and a folder only guy - hold a piece of paper in your weak hand and draw your knife, cut piece of paper, then put knife away. Would be great :D

I've tried to make fixed blades work for EDC in the past. It's not easy. There are almost too many compromises that have to be made, in order to make them work. I do still EDC my Anso Hybrid from time to time. It carries very well in a horizontal Kydex belt sheath. Jens really needs to go back to making some more fixed blades. As good as his folders look, his fixed blades are simply extraordinary.

hey paulhilborn, where do you get those pocket clips? those look absolutely terrific!

also...with kydex, you don't need 2 hands to put it away, since the opening is wide, or to secure it since the sheath is made to do that by itself.

You don't need two hands to put it away but does take more time and care than flipping a knife shut and sticking it in your pocket - not so much when it's on your belt but then depending on what you do and where you do it, likely to snag on things. It's why no body carries fixed blades on bomb dumps, it's not as convenient - I've done neck carry and IWB a lot.

You can take out a folder, cut something, return it to pocket and not even take your eyes off what you are working on. Doing that with a sheath in the pocket, IWB, under a shirt....you are going to be poking the sheath, body, clothing, etc. Most fixed blades small enough for long term comfort outside of belt carry also have handles that are less ergonomic and secure than a large folder.

I EDC a small FB on weekends, about 8" OAL with 4" handle. I stick a D ring thru the belt loop on the leather sheath, then attach ring to the belt loop of my pants just above my right rear pocket. Then the knife rides inside of my pocket or if i'm out working I usually let it dangle. Used it all day last weekend working for my landscaper friend and it was convenient and easy to access. My two cents on small FB's; get one with a handle that allows for a full, four finger grip.

I have carried my Izula in my cargo shorts in one of my own kydex pocket sheaths.
Stays in one place and very comfortable for EDC. Mine is the black one.
I've made a few of these for other members that EDC and that all seem to fit well for daily carry.

These are some options I use from time to time...

In my own experience I'd definitely give the nod to the folder for the ease of use factor, what I like about the fixed blade option is the lateral stress it will endure over a folder. The majority of time a folder is by far more convenient for me.

Thanks,

Paul

yep. I like to edc fixed blades, but there is a folder in my right pocket all the time. Paulhilborn, where do you get those pocket clips?

I often carry a Bark River IMP in its original sheath (same one that came with the TUSK), in the knife pocket on the right leg of my Carhartt work pants.
