Fixed Blade for an MP getting ready to deploy?

Need a little more info... What size knife & price range ? There are hundreds of knives out there but we need a little more info :o

Bravo 1 (kinda pricey)
RC-4
Ka-bar?

But yeah we need a little more info

Size: under 5"
Price: $100.00 - $150.00

I can come up with some more if I can sell a few of mine.

What will be the main use of the knife?

How will you carry it?

What have you been looking at?

RC-4. On the basis of what Rock6 often reports for military uses, five inches might be a bit large when paired with other gear. A nice thing about the RC-4 is that it is designed to integrate with molle webbing used in tactical vests and packs. Even comes with the molle lock clips!

Honestly your going to be using the fixed for cutting open MREs more then anything else.

Get a multi-tool and a nice folder and your set, I kept my multitool on my vest and a folder in my pocket and a hook on my gear. Never needed a fixed and if I did the issued was enough. A multitool on the vest and a good folder in your pocket and a rescue hook on your gear should be enough. I don't see a MP needing a fixed blade very often as I suspect your going to be a semi-fobbit depending on where your going.

Though if you do insist on getting a fixed I would highly recommend not limiting yourself on price. Go into the Busse forum area and the Busse F/S spot and find a nice AD (Active Duty and varieties of that) or MS (Mean[er] Street) or HS (High Street) with a sheath (If no sheath comes with it Buy Brown makes great ones). In the end its going to cost you 200-300 and your going to have a knife that not only will take good care of you, but its going to have many years of life and uses beyond when you get back.

Side Note: don't forget a rescue hook if you weren't issued one already. Don't get the smallest thing possible as when you need to get at it your going to need a solid grip with either hand. Take a look at a Benchmade Model 7, with your discount its a very justifiable purchase and it will do the job of cutting MREs open just as well as a nice fixed. [http://www.benchmade.com/products/7]

EDIT: Rat knives are nice, I'm partial to Busses but if nothing else a RC3 or RC4 will serve you well.

All our guys were issued Gerber Multi-tools and webcutters. (381st MP).

I took 4 knives with me last time, a Spyderco Wegner folder, a Cold Steel Kobun, a BR Sub-hilt, and my faithful CR (which is a pre-project knife). The Kobun was carried on the IBA and got a lot of "back and forth" time. The Spyderco got used a fair amount, the multi-tool got used a lot. Everything else was spare weight.

I've been looking closely at the RAT Knives as well as TOPS, though most of them seem a little too thick at 1/4" for real use as anything more than a prybar. I want that will take abuse, yes, but I don't need a sharpened prybar.

Gryphon M35
Go talk with Jeff over at the Cutlery Shoppe about getting one.
(I've been buying knives from Jeff for >20 years. And, I have two of the M35s. One for home and one for the SUV.)
The M35 used to be ~$100, but Jeff has them for ~$80.

Mike

+1

I also just got a Swamp Rat bandicoot which I'm growing to respect more and more.

I'm sorta gonna have to be odd man out, and first ask about an MP wearing and/or needing a fixed blade?

I've never really understood the few (very few) civilian cops I've seen wearing a fixed blade, under normal patrol circumstances.

Some people just prefer to carry a fixed blade. How many folks here carry FB's daily?
If it were me I'd probably look into the Rat3 or something about that size.

RAT RC-4.

I like mine so much I've traded away most all my other fixed blades except some beaters in my rigs.

With all due respect military police deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan will be nothing like normal patrol circumstances.

Good luck on your deployment. Been there done that..

Take my word for it, get something cheap.

You are gonna break it and/or lose it.

On all my deployments I carried a Ka-bar. Why?

Cuz I could get it dirt cheap through the exchage and use it like a tool.
Also, everyone has one so it won't end up mysteriously "borrowed" indefinitely.

Take it home and cover it in 3 coats of flat black Rustoleum.
