Fixed Blade for an MP getting ready to deploy?

Most likely (and I write this as someone who just got back), an MP deploying to Iraq is going to be one of the few people who do go out on patrols on a semi-regular basis, as our Armed Forces focus is now on training, and the MP's tend to go out to Police Stations in order to train the IP's (Iraqi Police). The MP's on our COB (Contingency Operating Base?) went outside the wire every day. Now, that's not to say that all MP's will be going outside the wire, as on post patrolling has increased, up to and including they have designated vehicles for traffic enforcement. It's getting pretty ridiculous. Now, if you're going to Afghanistan, you will almost definitely be going outside the wire. MP's aren't generally used as designated Force Protection, so the chances of an MP being a fobbit are probably slim.

With all due respect military police deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan will be nothing like normal patrol circumstances.

And with the same respect, he said "deploy"...he did not say where.

If he is deploying into a combat zone, your probably right, but if he were deploying to a regular base, where MP duties are more typical of LE duties, then a fixed blade with a friction retaining sheath, is pretty much providing the weapon for them......

:D

You can give me all the examples in the world and I can give you all the examples in the world back.

Now you can assume on where hes going or we can just go the opsec way. I just had a pair of buddies who got back from a "deployment" if you can call it from an area not what you would suspect.

Everyone is going somewhere, just some of us aren't going the same places.

Bear claw,
I inferred he was deploying to a combat zone, being an Army type that is what it means to me. Moving to another base is changing stations.

Wow, no need to get testy. I apologise for being vague. Most likely I will be deploying to Afghanistan. Sato what we are allowed to carry, dunno. We just got a new batallion commander so I'm not sure yet what he is going to allow.

I have recently bought a rc-4 and I have a sog seal pup elite. Both are very good. The sog has serrations the rc4 not. It makes the sog a little more versatile in cutting rope. The sog has a hollow ground which makes slicing a little easier. When I go canoeing I take the sog and when I'm on ftx I take the rc 4.

I was in the Gulf War in 90 and 91 and what I carried was a Multi tool, and we were issued one of those pilot survival knives but I never used it. I did use the Multi tool regularly. If you want a fixed blade to carry with all the gear youll have then I like the idea of the RC3 myself or Rat 3. Its a good size to carry and rugged as they come.

mtnguy,
BTW I carried a Sog Seal 2000 on my IBA if I was flying. Tucked it in behind my SAPI's so I didn't look like Rambo but still easily accessible. Honestly never used it and then had to spend $20 to ship it home registered mail as customs doesn't let put knives bigger than 6" blade in your tote. Though I did carry a few folders that got more than a little use. Main one was an Endura that I picked up at the PX for about $50.

The RC-4 (and al other RAT knives, except the Izula) are available with partial serrated edges as well as plain.

"Deployment encompasses all activities from origin or home station through destination,"

Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms

i would do a rat izula, can wear it around your neck under your shirt, and a real good multi tool, the high end leatherman or the stainless version that sog makes is full size and very slimline both for 150. easy, watch the exchange or there is a bunch on the popular shopping site....both in the used version and you do not have to spend a fortune...

As for me, I'd take a good multitool and a RC-3.
Sure it's not gonna break, unless you get really extreme abusive with it.
The RC-3, in my opinion, has the best length as a soldiers knife, it's not too long so you'll be able to strap on to your rig anywhere you'd like and it's not to short to limit your actions with it.

Also, it's a tad thinner than the RC-4, which makes it more a slicer but still almost indestructable.

You've got the color choise between OD handle/Orange grips, the standard ones or the MIL version which comes with some kind off khaki color grip and a black blade, also this one has a sharpened pommel.

Good luck and watch your six overthere!

Definitely a Scrapyard. I have a Son Of Dogfather LE and I love it. But just about anything from them would probably be good.

Whatever he gets he should get a kydex sheath with the molle attachment so he can wear it on his IBA, that would probably be better than wearing it on his belt.
