Fixed blade must-haves?

someone mentioned that the little fin was carbon steel...is this the case for the older ones?..because all the new ones I find are stainless

Yup. Of course before 1919 or so there was no stainless, but authorities as recent as Julia Child thought all stainless was crap. My little Finn types are carbon, with traces of chrome plating that never seems to have helped much.

Great knives posted by Humpa, link2derek, black mamba, Double Ott and SAK guy. Love the Canadian belt knives (have a couple myself) and the Green River knives. I have been thinking of picking up a Bark River EPK for pocket carry, just for something different.

Kephart pattern, definitely

any puukko

Hudson Bay camp knife

Little Finn, I've been looking for one in CV, an acquaintance swears by his for camping and hunting

Nessmuk

The Kehpart, Hudson and Nessmuk can all be gotten in production runs, but I find the custom made ones are more fun and of course better crafted.

You gotta have a 100 series Buck Knife of some sort! OH

105 and 124 at the bottom of this picture.

Another must have is an A G Russell Woodswalker. Great little B&T or small food prep knife.

Excellent list here - definitely worth repeating:

Every outdoorsman should own a Kephart, imo.

And if you hunt, a trailing point skinner like the Sharpfinger is a very handy one to own:

or, something along the lines of the classic old Marble's "Woodcraft:"

Hi

There are so many traditional knives coming from many countries
It would help if you could say what you want to use the knife for
that will focus all these diverse suggestions

I've got my eye on a Case little finn, Buck 102, and a Condor kephart, to name a few... Man, those Bark Rivers sure are nice. And made in my home state, too. I have a question on puukko's, though. I thought they were supposed to have a full tang, but some of the knives that come up as being puukko's don't have full tangs, such as the Marttiini arctic circle... Some of their stuff looks interesting, but I'm not familiar with that brand.

AFAIK: Puukkos aren´t full tang. The wood, leather stack or whatever cover the tang and it doesn´t go through in its full strength until it reaches the butt end. So no full tang construction there (I don´t know the english term of that - tapered tang evtl.?)

Martiini is making a good knife, at least what I thought about them while I could handle them at some gun stores. They are a well made product and well worth the bucks to spend for

Old hunter hey i was given the buck 100 small when my grandfather passed but didn't know anything about it. It was stolen from my apartment about a year ago. Where can I get another?
