The story that I heard is that when the boys in Berlin decided to pass new draconian (by German standards) knife laws, the very traditional/conservative hunting organizations from places like Bavaria, which apparently still have significant political clout, got them to specifically exclude knives of the traditional hunting fixes blade size from the carry restrictions. They also managed to get the traditional German automatics exlcuded from the general ban. I say obey the law and carry one and everything will be in ordnung.
Fixed blades are fine as long as the blade is under 12cm long.

In fact for as long as I`m staying in Germany I`ll carry a fixed blade. At the moment a Fred Perrin La Griffe and Pepperspray because it´s gotten unsafe, especially when I`m with my girlfriend, where I moved to 2 1/2 years ago.
But if you want to be real sheeple friendly here carry a SAK. People don`t even consider them knives here. Or go with something ultratraditional like a Nicker.
