Fixed Blade Recommendations

How do you like your TF24? Does the sheath wobble because of the balance and the clip point?

I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I can safely assume it will perform well. Initial observations are very positive. It is very much my style, but style is very subjective.

Pros:
Blade shape is perfect. I like little belly and very high saber grinds.
Blade thickness and length are great but would like it just a tad longer.
Handle shape is very comfortable with an excellent guard.
Quality sheath is very tight and minimalistic.

Cons - unfortunate for such a great knife:
Coated blade. Magnacut does not need to be coated, but if you're going to coat it, DLC is all it would currently want. Cerekote sucks in my opinion.
Sharpening choil is way too big.

All in all, this is a high quality knife and should be a great EDC, a soldier knife, and a kitchen knife due to the blade being lower than the handle. I am planning on buying another one when they are back in stock. I have to figure out the best way to remove the coating. Then it will be almost perfect.

It's interesting to see that the tang has a curved transition into the blade, even if it had to be necked down slightly to do that, in order to reduce the stress concentration at that location.
They could have eliminated the sharp corner without necking it down. I think they did that to fill with epoxy to lock the handle in place. Which makes the epoxy voids shown a little concerning

I ended up finding a Battle Goat for minimal markup (eBay fees) so I’m going to see how that fills the need for my EDC fixed blade. I have plenty of full size bush and tactical knives that the TF24 can wait. Currently the SOG Seal FX has been to my liking. It usurped my fixed Adamas and Nimravus on my plate carrier.

Wolverine, you ever pick up anything?

I’m much more of a folder guy. But lately I’ve been wanting a fixed blade. At the moment , I’m favoring the classic Buck 119 with S35VN and green micarta. I’d love to order a custom 119 from Buck but a lead time of 6-8 weeks ruins that notion.

So before I buy a 119 , what else is available that’s similar in size? It’ll be a daily/occasional carry for the winter along with a folder. Here are the specs I’m looking for :
- Stainless blade (semi-stainless like D2 or CruWear will work too).
- Full tang.
- Overall size 9”-11”.
- $400 price cap.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

I have my eyes on a CRK "Backpacker" in Magnicut. It is full tang, but smaller than you are looking for.
Looks like a reasonable to carry and use utility camping knife, but it is not a "bushcraft" or "camp" knife CRK does offer larger fixed blades. Their Green Beret is a full tang 7" in Magnicut while their Pacific is an inch less, also in Magnicut.

Randall makes a number of finely crafted, heirloom quality user knives in about any size and blade profile you might fancy. I think their #1 Fighter can be had as large as 9"' There are several Bowie blades that make your size expectation. Their off catalog "Saquatch" is a dealer special model. It is a hefty near Kukri . . .but they run several multiples above your budget. I like the Randall #25 in a 6" size. Most models are available in either carbon steel or 440C stainless.

Ontario had a large version of the classic USME Ka-Bar.

FDound it!

Great recommendations. I’m gonna go with some variation of the Buck 119 and a Navman custom. Good times ahead 😃

If you are looking for that kind of setup. Why not Vosteed Dirty Girl?
Until you mentioned it, I was unfamiliar with that knife. But I’m not a fan of karambits. And I wasn’t running both of those simultaneously. My Adamas usually gets bumped because the sheath sucks. Finally BM seems to be putting some thought into sheaths; but thats my opinion and experience. Their sheaths likely work for some people, just not me.

Hmmm. Add some handle scales and a better sheath to the Adamas?
