OK, I have looked and looked hard but I cant seem to settle on a fixed blade that I like enough to buy.....

So I need some suggestions BUT here are my provisos (hey, I didnt say it would be easy :p)

No Rat Cutlery - I know they are worshipped here but I find their designs boring (yup, boring).
No Busse - too expensive
No Scrapyard - ditto
No Cold Steel - too Chinese
No Bark River - too obvious
No SOG - too much funny steel
No Mora - Too ugly
No Fallkniven - Too Swedish :D

So what's left? What have I missed? Hit me!

You missed Fallkniven. www.fallkniven.com
They have loads of different models that you might like.
From the small WM1 neck knife to the huge M1 mine probe/sandwich slicer :)
I have most of them but I use the WM1, F1 and H1 fixed and the U2 folder.
All these knives perform extremely well, but still have a kind of innocent look so not to upset the knife scared people.

One extra thing is that it is the issue survival knife used by Swedish Airforce, which flies the same JAS39 Gripen/Griffon as South African AF bought :)
For some reason the Sw AF came to the conclusion that they should give the pilot a better knife than the modified red handled Mora knife they used to have.

condor, becker or mora ?
or maybe look for a custom

what are you looking for the fixed blade to do btw?

what about a roselli? those are not to pricey and really nice knives, look into the UHC blades.

This must be a working knife...

To narrow it down:

I prefer synthetics like G10, micarta and carbon fiber
I prefer tool steels like O-1, A2 and the like, though am not opposed to stainless steels.
I prefer a guard, single integral ideally.
I like clip points/bowies

You have a lot of specifics about what you don't want, compared to what you want. Looking at your loose requirements (excepting those of manufacturers) why don't you look at some of he custom stuff that is posted here?

I have been knocked over by some of the designs and execution of some of the makers here. Prices aren't bad, either. You could specify steel, handle material, and sheath and have a knife made to your specs.

You pretty much limited yourself to a custom/handmade. Not a bad thing IMHO.

Several of the makers here can make something that will make you happy.

Just browse through the makers forums, some of these guys will even make it if you can draw it.

uhhhh, with every knife desginer you mentioned, you don't know any others that might have something different that interests you....? You got Ontario, Swamp Rat, Fehrman, Ruana, Ka-Bar, Spyderco, Benchmade... You also mentioned you want blades with O-1, or A-1, correct me if I am wrong, your not going to find an abundance of makers out there that use that in production knives. You probably want to go for a custom knife then, but your going to pay out the arse for it.

Not really. Well under Busse, even under BRKT. A tad more than RAT and Fallkniven.

Depends on which maker, what size knife, and how fancy you want it.

I have several customs made for me from a maker here on the board. Tough knives made from O1 and the most $$ on one knife was about $120.

I stand corrected, I thought O-1, or A-1 would cost and arm and a leg custom made, I hear they are a "forgiving" steels for the makers, but I just thought because of the strength, and type of steel, the blade custom made would drive the price up alot, again I stand corrected. Could you steer me into the right direction, I am interested after the holiday season of getting a custom made knife.

I have visited the Makers for Sale section many times. Thought I had settled on one but it seemed to be a dead end...

I agree the custom route might be the right one for me, seeing as I am such a fussy bastard. :D

Fehrman does interest me, but their prices are steep...

Yeah I know customs cost a lot too but some are very competitively priced.

It is good being a fussy bastard when it comes to knives, that means you are a collecter, not a hoarder, which is not hard to be, when you love knives.

What about a Koster Buschcraft or the recent Spyderco Buschcraft.....um....vox knives....JK knives....Breeden knives....the WS&S section has great pictures of a lot of great fix blades

I only have experiance with John of JK Handmade knives. Forum name Stomper, he has his own forum here in the makers section.

I like his work/prices enough that I had him make my 10 year old son's first custom. The little blue pocket fixed/firesteel combo.

His knives are made from O1 or 1095, your choice(mine are O1). The top two sheath's are not John's. They are Sharpshooter replacements. John wasn't making firesteel loops/slots when I bought those knives.

Pretty tough too.
