Fixed blade Winkler vs Survive GSO

Excellent write-up ninja. Exactly what I was looking for and much appreciated.

Not sure on the bushcrafter steal, but the WASP ones were just listed so I assume those might be newer production and therefore possibly 80crv2?

It's probably moot anyway as I don't think I want the WASP and I probably can't find a maple.

So I'm thinking belt or hunting, maple or sculpted maple. Hoping to hold each and make a decision from there.

Winkler knife has long wait too.

By no means a GSO knife is cheap. Shrade is cheap not GSO. You can pass on a GSO or even a Ka Bar knife to your sons and daughters too.

I think the thing with the Winkler is it's a knife done by a master smith while the GSO is production. I would have bought another winkler had he had a version with longer blade.

Just my stupid opinion and I used to carry a box cutter as my EDC. :-)

I like the feel of the sculpted maple handle a lot, very happy but I will admit it is not as pretty as the none sculpted maple

I have a Winkler Belt Knife that should arrive this week. Maple sculpted handle. I'll let ya know how I like it. Think it's a knife you may be proud to hand down to other generations.

Would like to get my hands on the TAD (Tan Micarta) version.

Beautiful pair of blades there.

I just sold my belt knife, telling myself that I didn't need multiples of similar winkler fixed blades but after that picture I'm missing it.

I'm going to try and make due with the spike knife on my pack and the hunting knife for outdoors. Being completely honest though, I will
probably replace the belt knife some time down the road after my current projects are all wrapped up.

Lefty, can you elaborate on why you kept those two over the belt? I'll mainly be using the knife for outdoor use and I'm still deciding on which model to get.

only reason is because I needed to move a couple and that is one of the ones that sold first.
My favorite was always the hunting knife, then the belt knife. I found the jimping on the flat spine of the hunting knife to be a little more comfortable
than the angled jimping on the belt knife, and with the flat spine the hunting goes back into it's sheath a little easier. Non issues really, I would be happy
with either.
Best of luck.

Nice. Definitely won the grain lottery with that one. Really want a knife with grain like that, you just never know what you're gonna get.

I could very easily be wrong, but that looks more like it's been through an aqua fortis treatment. Either way, it looks absolutely stunning.

I don't own own a Winkler but I do have a GSO 4.1 and have been very happy, but I actually picked up a small BHK for under $100 which is a bit shorter and a little thinner and now it covers all my camp needs. The 2 knives you are shopping both have their positives, but I would make a list of your " camp chores " and see which fulfills the needs best, some knives may have a odd shape that wouldn't work well for skinning or far to thick for food prep, try slicing up some potatoes, tomatoes, chicken with a 1/4 thick knife, great test of actual function. Good luck on your shopping.

I've had four GSO's. Sold one, gifted two to kids, kept the GSO 3.5 in 3V. It's not the length you want, but it fits my needs.
I am certain that the Winkler is a great knife. I'm not likely to own one.

I've had (2) Winkler Belt Knives and (2) GSO 4.1's. I still have the Winkler. For ME, it came down to the overall "feel" of the knife. IMO that 'feel' is evidence of the thought put into the blade and handle design by a Master Smith. The sheath is light-years better than the kydex that comes with a GSO. Much better availability as well.
I've not tortured either one, just typical camping and hiking use here in MT. The Winkler (80CRV2) takes a sharper edge, but the GSO (CPM20CV) held a slightly less sharp edge a bit longer in my experience. YMMV.

How is that axe working out for you? I am seriously thinking of picking one up, despite the scary price tag. How heavy is it in the hand? I dont want a brick that will tire me out but it needs to be heavy enough (top end) to get the job done.

It seems we hear that claim a lot about expensive/custom knives, yet the soldiers who post here often say a multi-tool is what is used. I've seen pics of ESEE's and Becker's in service, but can't recall many high-end customs. Maybe I missed the pics or they're carried by "special operators" who can't be mentioned or photographed:)

High end customs are pretty expensive and pretty rare in any circles let alone with guys who have to worry about weight issues and the possibility of losing a $500 knife so, yep... it isn't that common compared to many other blades or multitools. That being the case, I don't know too many real soldiers who don't have at least one fixed blade that they like to carry for all the stuff a multitool just won't do. Not saying these are all great fixed blades as (like has been stated before) not all soldiers know much about knives and are just as bad as everyone else at picking out a good one.

Sorry I just saw this, I love it, does not feel heavy at all.

Most people dance with what they brung, or what they can bring easily. Whatever is issued, the PX sells, or they can get cheap. How many people rocked dragonskin when it was all the rage? How many people rock any non-manufactured knife? How many people even rock emersons, striders, etc.? With a handmade knife, there aren't going to be many, period. Do note though that the above poster seems to be more special than the average soldier. He is also picky about his equipment.
