Fixed blades

If moisture is rare, you have many options..

Me personally I kinda like local woods/American

-Osage is one of my favorites, too. Very hard, very strong. It starts off orange, then darkens to a warm, honey brown. Nice, swirly grains, tight, smooth pores. The last knife I finished for someone was made with it....

I like ebony for an exotic.
I'm not sure if that wood is sustainable, if that matters to you? But it sure is Pretty.

That's kinda why I like more local woods.
Any fruit or nut wood works too. We have a lot of great woods in North America.
Maple, cherry, walnut, oak, mesquite, locust.
-ive got a bunch of sumac I'm drying. It shimmers really pretty.

You've got tons to choose from.
Josh says he likes walnut so that’s another option. I’ll see which handle materials I have to choose from when the time comes.

The choices are almost overwhelming. I would start with do you prefer darker or lighter, then do you prefer lots of grain/burl…etc. Don’t forget there are many colors available in dyed woods like maple. If you do some searches on these forums you will see some beautiful and varied woods. I think if Josh makes a recommendation it will be a great choice because every knife of his that is posted looks fantastic.

Has anyone seen walnut root? Yes, the root of the walnut tree! It is probably the best ever IMHO. I had a friend sell a huge walnut tree on his 200 year old farm for timber. The man who bought it made sure the root came with it. A backhoe was brought in to dig up the root - it consumed the whole backend of a dump truck. The man who bought it said the root wood would pay for the tree ($10,000) - the above ground walnut wood would be his profit. It's quite the wood - but I have haven't seen any knife handles with it - a friend had a few gun handles - brought a pretty price too!

I had to chuckle when I saw your post, as I believe that I own the exact same Teddy IIs.

I wanted to inquire as to if you'd had a chance to use your Squad Leader II and (*if so) what your initial impressions were.
Awesome, the Teddy II's my favorite knife of all time aesthetically, not that popular though for some reason; I'm an absolute sucker for antique ivory micarta. Wanna share yours?

The SL2's from this year's run, mine came sharp and with no flaws out of the box but some people complained about the fullers having machining marks left over, can't speak for that personally though. I use it as my edc, so most of the work it's seen was cutting packaging, boxes and food, but I've hiked with it a couple of times and it's pretty great paired with a folding saw like a Silky f180 or pocketboy; feels very light to carry but has the thickness (7mm, almost trailmaster tier) to split any wood like it's nothing and the full convex paired with the overall low weight and handle-heft of the knife makes fine work a piece of cake. Don't expect to be efficiently chopping stuff other than saplings and small branches though, just doesn't have the weight/balance for it, but a saw perfectly compensates for that. So far so good, if you're looking for a sturdy compact knife that can handle both hard work and fine slicing and carving tasks I highly recommend it, but I'd suggest to either get one from past runs or ask for pics beforehand if buying from DLT/ksf.
