Fixing The Problem

The problem with this idea is that to grow on YouTube, you need to post consistently and often. If they devoted that much time into testing their knives in detail, the channel would shrink. They already do far more testing than is ideal for viewership, the formula favors cursory unboxing videos over tests. Look at the size of Metal Complex's channel and then look at Cedric and Ada, for instance.
The thing is, how many times have you bought a knife from a large commercial dealer and thought to yourself, I’d better have this blade tested to make sure it’s “xyz”. Same as I’ve never thought to test my truck to make sure it was a Toyota or a Jeep. I just take it for granted that I’m buying a Toyota or a Jeep.

Curious about your opinion regarding Dealers in the two snippets above.

Very good question actually. . .

I think that comes down to their level of knowledge and complicity...or lack thereof.

And in regard to testing, who's going to vet the vetters? And where does it stop?

We've had dealers and purveyors who have taken advantage of selling a pig in a poke.

Personally, I prefer to not start out thinking that the folks I deal with here, (members, dealers, makers), are dishonest...until I have a basis for doing so. And then the hammer drops.

Correct-- they would have to insure that the knife is a randome sample. And testing for hardness could be done, right?

Don't get upset fellas-- it's just an idea that I happen to believe in, but not willing to create harsh feelings over.
not upset at all, just pointing out things that should be considered.
If you can't reply in a civil fashion without mocking or posting memes, maybe don't post a reply here.

Members can disagree without being disagreeable. Or should be able to.
sorry Blues. bad place for a joke on those guys...ill remove it.....

And there in lies the real issue. We can’t protect ourselves 100% of the time. At some point it just comes down to trust that the person you’re dealing with is going to be honest about whatever it is you’re dealing with. Not everyone will be, but most will.

Have there even been any knives that DBK tested that were confirmed to be the wrong steel? I know the bad MagnaCut knife was indeed MagnaCut. Why not take a stand that every knife reviewer needs to be checking the steel composition of every knife? I mean I don’t agree but at least be consistent.

when we all knew the brand and owner couldnt be trusted and made bad products. those who ignored that...thats on them.

So you're okay with just "Buyer Beware"? I just wanna make sure I understand your perspective.

I really only buy knives from good makers who can be trusted.
As do I. However the company in question had a reputation of being a knife maker who could be trusted.
At least by the general knife buying public....

Yes. They took a knife from the company that was verified to be Chinese Steel and found ALL kinds of problems.

It's just an idea. If the knife community eschews the idea. I am okay with that. It would not be the first time I was wrong.

The idea is that DBK would take the lead and then other "Steel Nerds" would follow their lead.

Do you think it would help with finding counterfeit knives?

It won't be with anyone. I'm discussing and debating an idea. In a civil manner
and without vitriol. Without arguing. I am sorry if I irritated you. Apparently I stuck a nerve and
I am not willing to continue drilling.
