Flat grinding jig

The question I have is how do you rotate the blade "around the grind" While the grind you show there may be a flat grind, it is not a straight full height grind but one that follows the curvature of the blade. Does tilting the tip down in the jig do that for you? or is that done strictly to get the slanted plunge cut?

As you grind the bevel. The grind line will follow the shape of the edge.

How do you alter the grind if you don't want this to happen? How do you refine the grind along the belly and tip? There's a lot more going on, along this part of a blade than flat. If there is distal taper ground into the blade, forward, from plunge to tip, the area forward of the curve is a spiral along three dimensions. That wont grind flat. They look funny if they are. I can usually tell if blades have been ground using a sled; as you say, the grind line will follow the shape of the edge.

Spiral? hard to get surveying terminology out of your brain, isn't it Fred? :)

Its a profession that last. Even after you're out of it; you've processed so math, its hard to shut off. If you like numbers, surveying can become a passion. I loved it. Have a good turkey day, Fred

I'm sure you can alter it anyway you want to. But I don't do spirals on my knives.

How much do these cost?? And do you think this will work on my good ole crafstman belt grinder?

I started grinding on a 1"x42" Craftsman grinder/sander. Added a larger workrest on top of the original. Used this same type jig.

Sorry this isn't the place to talk prices. email
