Flat Ground Folders?

Does anyone know of any flat ground Kershaw folders? I think it would be a welcome addition to the Kershaw lineup. Does anyone share my thoughts?

The reason I ask is my obsession with knives demands a huge variety of blades. Shapes, steels, handle materials, locks, grinds etc. The variety Kershaw has to offer is my rational for a collection.

I hope, at least, that this will spur discussion.

Thanks!
Mike

A lot of the older stuff was flat ground, including my favorites the 1431, 1436, 1430 and the 1435. As far as current production goes, the 1030 and 1035 hunting knives and a few other hunters. The vapors look to be a flat grind. That is about it for current production, the list for older stuff is much larger.

The both the JYD and JYD2 are flat ground, but not the SG2 model.

Interesting....I really ought to find a place to look at them. Unless someone says otherwise I think my Shallot may in fact be flat ground too....

Yeah, with the slight recurve of the Shallot it sure seems flat but if I look closer, you are right, it is definately a high-hollow grind.

I have nothing against hollow-grinds but wonder if Kershaw plans to have a larger variety of grinds in it's folders. If there are none, I guess I will have to live with pocket scalpels like the ENER-G! :D

The Leeks are hollow ground, with the exception of the ZDP Leek which is Flat ground.

I believe my Shallot wat hollow ground too. You'd have to ask Malius now, if he ever comes back to the forum...

ok, i have the ZDP leek, so i wasnt sure.

all this talk about the ENER-g i am wanting to pick one up now, hollow grind or not.

Off the top of my head...

Flat ground: JYD1 & 2, Cyclone & Mini, Speed and Spec Bump, Groove, Storm, Vapor, CPMD2 Leek (I've seen photos of a flatground version, I don't know if that's the production model though).

Hollow ground: Leek, SG2 JYD, Needs Work, NRG

This is all from memory so I might be wrong on a few.

I am no expert but looking at a couple of leeks it would appear that the ones that have a grind that terminates with a curve ( up close to the pivot point ) are flat ground and the ones that terminate with a straight line ( perpendicular to the edge ) are hollow ground.
Just guessing here the flat grind appears to be used on premium steels and hollow grind on "regular" steels. The zdp, s30v, and d2 are flat but the damascus is hollow, go figure.
BTW I would really like to see leeks in s60v, s90v, bg42 and ats34 just so I could have a nice exotic steel collection all in the same pattern.

Bump is also flat ground.
Kershaw doesn't grind flat based on premium Vs non premium steel . It's more a decision based on how the knife is to be used and what will compliment the knife best. Some models are done in flat ground and in hollow ground versions.

RAM is hollow, but you want one anyway.

so flat ground is used more on larger, heavy use knives?

Who is this KenOnion guy that keeps dropping in on us and
how does he know so much about these knives??

Don't be a stranger Ken, you can learn a lot from these guys. ;) :D

Where's my manners.....Welcome to the forums!!

Thanks for the welcome ! I visit fairly often ,don't post alot though. The Kershaw folks handle the questions and info quite well. I'm pleased you guys like the knives and love to hear about what you'd like to see us do in the future. As well as feedback on our current offerings.
