I did a little work on my platen surface /to get it back flat.Hand sanding on my granite surface. So 80 grit is where I'm at now.It is flat again. How far should I take it? 320 / 600 or maybe 1000.It is a stock KMG.

If it's flat I don't think it needs to go finer. Have you thought about putting on a Cerran glass one? They are much, much better lasting. Frank

I have thought about it.This one side lasted me 6 months and I haven't touched the other side yet.Only took about 20 min. to get it back straight.I was thinking smoother is better but if 80 grit is good i'll stop there.

in the long run you will end up wanting the pryoglass im hard on them and gets alot of use withought ware and its slicker then steel so it stays cooler. if there was one draw back of the glass is in the winter static elect. shocks happen all the time less you have a grounding strap

Yes, you want a glass or hard steel platen. Thank us later! :)

No truer words spoken. I went with a harden one because getting static shock is not an option for me.

I made one from 01 but next time I tune up my grinder I think I will go with 1/2" D2

I go a little bit cheaper and get plain flat ceramic tiles from Home Depot and use that for a platen. They work great and are less than a dollar and you can cut them to get 2 and possibly 3 platens.

I've used glass for years works good.

Setting up a 36 radius harden A2 platen from Nathan right now. Will get a flat one from him later. These things are very Nice!

For the static problem, get yourself some anti static spray for clothes and give the inside of the moving belt a spray for two or three seconds. Ii most often works very well. Frank

Wow anti-static spray, who would have thunk it.I put some plain ceramic floor tile on my Craftsman grinder about a year ago and all Winter that thing sparked me up.

I like the shock I get from the glass, it keeps me awake and reminds me that I'm grinding a blade;)

I have one of Nathan's hardened A2 flat platens. It's awesome. Way better then the stock kmg platen. Mine got crazy, very fast. Nathan's has stayed true through hard use and hasn't wore at all. Best platen I've had and all ill use from now on.

I stated that the original lasted about 6 months, but probably not that long as I have been fighting to keep a good straight line.Just didnt know what was up.Being new to the craft. Now I have to decide Glass cover or Hardened Platen.

Why not go with both? I have a pyroceram lined platen for my heavy flat grinding and use Nathan's fine flat platen for final clean up length ways. But then I prefer the sexiness of radiused plunges and coupled with a carbide file guide makes getting things even a snap...

Has anyone seen pyroglass platens in stock anywhere? I've been looking for a while with no luck.

I am going to look tonite for the glass platen.I know i've seen it before on 1 of the popular knife-maker supply sites.

Just bought one from USA Knifemaker Supply. Have not had time to add it to my little grinder yet, so I don't have any feedback yet on how it works, of course I am just starting the transition from files to using a belt grinder.

I've been looking for some Pyroceram too, but nothing to be had in 2x7 from the big knife suppliers. I can't remember the site but I found some in stock a week ago through a recommendation in another thread but the shipping charge was more than the glass. Does anyone have a good supplier?

Thanks.

How does this work for you Big Chris? Do they last a while? What do you cut them with? I have been curious if this would work or not? Thanks! Don
