Flea Market Survival Haul

Hmmm, down in southern ohio there is about 600 acres that my family hunts on that is more then open for use.
Atv trails, a cabin with electricity and beer, a fire pit, and a creek.
Not all that woodsy but practice wilderness survival by day and chat with the WW2 vet owner of the property near the fire by night.

Quoteing this so its on this page.

Nice finds, congrats!

Not far from me, I'll have to check it out, thanks for the info.

.....An Ohio gathering would be cool.......

Man, don't say that! That would be the ONLY way we would ever get to meet the wonderful folks on this forum.

Where I live, it's flat as a pool table and spattered with small woodlots about the corn fields but, if no one found a more interesting spot (hard to do), I have two acres of very "tent-worthy" grass and would arrange for a latrine. Southeasteen Ohio and Northeastern Ohio have some incredible outdoors areas (not to slighht the other half - they're just harder to find and spread out more). Ohio has such a wonderful history and the "Eastern Woodlands," deciduous forest is absolutely "HOME," in the Fall. Winters can be horrbly unpredictable though. Summer is "summer" and Spring is great but, again, somewhat unpredictable - hence having grown up with an outsdoor survival mentality. That would be so cool - if it were within three hours I could get my wife there but we wouldn't be able to "camp." She can't hike too rough a trail on her scooter but she and I would vounteer to hang out and cook, clean stuff, etc. I placed a new fire ring at the edge of the paved part of the drive and she got out by the fire two nights in a row - all wrapped up in a poncho liner and cozy as all get out. It got down to 51F last night, was still, clear and amazingly gorgeous to be outside.

OK, looks like we're heading back into Tiffin for the Fle Market again. She enjoyed it so much, we're blowing off all the chores and goofing off again today. Gotta love a "cheap date" that involves bargains on gear and the possibility of scoring a useable old tool (no, I am not talking about myself!). I will see if my wife will snap a few shots of the "axe in action." I can barely get a shot of a knife appearing to be in action by myself without being injured so, I won't attempt the same with the axe!!

Flea markets are great treasure troves for cheap gear. You just have to wade through all the other stuff to get to the gold.

Yeah, and that's a LOT of wadin' sometimes but I bought a brand new Alice pack, with frame and all the straps at a flea market between Salinas and San Jose in '83(?) for $16. I retired it last year and started looking for something new. The guy I got the Blackhawk 3-day assault pack from had more today and with a bunch of exterior pockets and for $40!! If I'd loaded mine up and thrown it in the Jeep I would have swapped him but it was at home waiting to be cleaned up. He gratiously swapped canteens and covers around with me until we weeded out the ones that had "stuff" growing in them and the ones that smelled like Kool-Aid.

Not as many people there today but it was till a nice goof-off day. Saw a lot of chinsey, wanna-be e-tools but none like the old, (once) minty WWII model I "traded up" for when in the Infantry. Seems no one wanted to have to lug that baby around but, when it cam time to dig, it outclassed that little black folding lawn-chair thing everyone else had.:D When I out-processed, I turned in one of the "lawn-chair" jobs and kept the antique for myself. Fits nicely onder the rear seat of the Cherokee. I never figured out how it lasted in "issue" that many years but someone was handed one in 1980.

This place in southern ohio isnt to far, its just south of athens.
Like I said I have access to it and there are plenty of places outside for tents and plenty of places inside to sleep.
The whole 600 acres of it is woods and fields.
Plenty of back trails to hike also.

I'm north-central Ohio.

I'll drive just about anywhere within Ohio. I'm game.

Alright sounds good.
I'm away from ohio for a few weeks so it would have to be done in late august.
It really is nice down there.

....... just south of athens......

OH! That IS a nice area! I love that part of the state! There are all kinds of neat little things tucked away in the hollers and a lot of woods covering what was once a booming area virtually stripped of trees. It's hard to believe what all went on in Southeastern Ohio up to the early 1900s and now so much has been reclaimed by nature.

OK, now for the promised "Axe-shun" shots............
Nothing spectacular, and all I could find to split was som soft Maple, but it's exactly the kind of splitting I wanted this one for. Beats the heck out of swinging or carrying a maul, sledge/wedges when you don't have to.

There is even a shower.

wow.. that is quite a haul jeff... nice scores there man... our flea market we have here in santa cruz rocks... i have scored a ton of new gear from there...

Jeff... I gotta learn to shop like you... I have scored some decent finds at flea markets and yard sales, but nothing like what you hauled in! Great finds! Flea markets can be a lot of fun, especially with the Mrs.

Now the next time ya go... be sure to keep an eye out for a Gossman Tusker for ME.. :)

My all-time favorite has to be the one in San Jose. We used to stop at "The Big Red Barn" too on the way up there from Salinas. I got the biggest kick out of the Golf cart with a keg mounted on the back and you flag the guy down, he'd stop, get off and draw you an ice-cold $1 twelve ounce cup-o-suds, take your buck and mosey on down the line. Never made it to Santa Cruz though. Ours sucked for a long time. I think I got lucky this time though!

I will find out after the Fair if I was just lucky this time or if this Flea Market has really shaped up. My wife enjoyed it so much that we went back Sunday, just to get her a funnel cake. Yeah, I'll keep an eye out for your Tusker but you do realize that I get mine first and the odds of finding two will be slim.:D

Funny how one starts to think after the influence on the forum. The first thing I did when I got home was pile my loot on the wood pile and run in the house for the camera. NO ONE I work with has ANY appreciation for such pleasures but, that's why so many old tools get sold for so little so, we win! The old fella who sold me the axe asked "now what th' heck y' gonna do with that?" I told him I was collecting stuff for my estate sale. I don't know if he didn't get it or didn't think it was funny:grumpy: but the girl with him about wetted herself giggling about it.:o He didn't bring her back Sunday.
