Flea Markets 2013

Ok. So these all weren't from a flea market but maybe we can open this up to on the way to a flea market ... or flea market season.

Wandering around CT and MA in advance of Brimfield:

Rockaway hatchet. $5

Kelly Flint Edge double $2

R. Mfg. Co. very best (78)? Connecticut $2

unknown as yet CT. bought with mallet and a handle for $20. EDIT: Wire wheel reveals it's not a CT but a Mainer marked Oakland, ME with a '38 on the bottom.

OK Coop, Mothers day.

A Vaughn boys axe, Collins, Man dbl bit, Kelly registerd(abused) and a True American hatchet.
No Rockways or jersey's around here.

Spent all of Wednesday and some of Thursday at Brimfield. Got some nice ones, passed on a bunch too clean and too expensive, and picked up a few hopefully surprises for very cheap.

the Maine edition (Snow & Nealley, two Spillers (one with lugs and another unusual (I think railroad tie hewing axe), and a unknown as yet double in really nice condition)):

other nice ones (plumb double, sandvik 1 1/4#, a huge (5 lbs maybe?) fire axe of some sort and three nearly mint Nicholson files):

Passed on this ($650 for the rack and four axes - one of which was a really sweet CT).

Oh No, Coop, save some for me! I'll be at Brimfield on Saturday!

Here's my haul from yard sales/estate sale only this morning. I'm pretty excited about the vice and the tiller attachment for $5 each, been wanting to try one of these tiller attachments in my garden. Otherwise there's some Nicholson, Eagle, Black Diamond (Canada), and Vixen wood(?) files, as yet unnamed axe with a metal wedge (I think), what looks like Bridgeport hatchet, and a Disston hand saw.

Picked up the axes for 5 apiece. Just wanted the handle on the brush axe. I think there is a name on the broad axe but so far I can just read cast steel.
The Record vice was just to cheap to pass up. Vices are kind of like clamps, just hard to own to many of them.

Spent about 7hrs at Brimfield today, and saw about 20% of it. Passed a bunch of axes, too expensive. I'll take a perfect CT, but otherwise I don't need any more clutter in the house - the collection is mostly complete.

$5 for the broad axe? Cant' beat that with a stick. It looks almost unused.

Ya I couldn't believe it. I think it may say barton cast steel but am not sure.
There was a flea market at the fair grounds. I for sure didn't get all the good deals there. Some items that where not that good of a deal I came back to haggle with the venders and they were gone.
They had a OK treadle grinder that I thought I had time to come back for. I was wrong. There was another one there that was in as good a shape as I have ever seen. He wanted 500 for it but said he would take 350. If I didn't already have one I would have bought it. I also picke up this frame saw for 10.

$5 Collins Legitimus

a little more for this Collins Bonded. Came with a nice easily savable / reusable handle with Maine company branding.

Picked up this Council tool jersey at a local park and sell gravel lot. Seems to be in good shape other than a minor ding in the edge. The handle is seated funny, and has some sort of black epoxy or something on top.

Coop, officially placing a bet that the Jersey is a Rixford. let me know if I am right.

Hi all,

Op, YOU the MAN! Wow! I think you found more in one weekend than I did in the last five weeks! Sorry for not yet being able to post pixs but, yesterday I bought three (I'm guessing) "Roofing type Hatchets" in small, med and large for nine dollars for all three. I do not yet know the brand(s) name until after Vinegar bath/clean up. Of course last week I bought the beautiful NOS circa 90's Gransfors Bruk "Wildlife" Hatchet with CURVED handle. Nice Hatchet. Truthfully, I have been recently looking for old Butcher type Carbon Knives. I found what I believe is a VERY old 17.5" OAL, 12" blade, five pin wood handle, one inch wide blade, Butcher knife! It's awesome! However, I am unable to find a name. Very much like (but not, at least I think) a "Green River" Knife. Cost me two whole dollars! OK, while not "edge" related per se, I have tell you of some UN-real finds I've made over the last two days. Yesterday, I scored a XXL Tall (my size) LL Bean (made in USA) 100% heavy duty WOOL Bib overalls! They appear to be "AS NEW" (perhaps never used). I checked the price of this item on line and it normally sells for $139.00, currently on sale for one hundred dollars. My cost, three dollars! WHOA! So, now I'll be toasty warm this Winter while playing in the Woods with all my Axes, Hatchets and Knives! I am just so JAZZED about having found such a wonderful Wool Winter Clothing item as these Overalls. (I could never afford to buy new from store). My second find (today) is also Wool and might even be a better (money wise) find than the Overalls. I found yet another item, this time a LL BEAN (made in Ireland) XL (I am loosing weight) 100% Wool "Fishermens" Sweater. In my research, I've seen this Sweater listing for two hundred dollars on that bidding web site! Yikes! I bought mine Irish Wool Fishermans Sweater for seven dollars! This Sweater is beautiful and it looks as if it's brand new/never been worn. So,
(just in case I can't afford to pay for my Heating Oil this Winter) or run out of firewood, I'll still be able to keep warm lol!
At any rate, starting tomorrow is my vacation and I am going to check out several Flea Markets in search of some neat items! Wish me luck!

Regards,
HARDBALL

only markings are a 3 on the face of the axe and then a 2 on the bottom of the poll (maybe half of a date?). you're probably right.
