Flea Markets 2013

:highly_amused::highly_amused::highly_amused:

Well, you don't need to give me any prizes, only if you want to :p

If'n you all want to know what the giveaway was.. It was the placement of the weight stamp, and the shape of it. I have a 3 pound rixy Connecticut and the "3" stamp looks exactly the same.

Ok. So these all weren't from a flea market but maybe we can open this up to on the way to a flea market ... or flea market season.

Wandering around CT and MA in advance of Brimfield:

Rockaway hatchet. $5

I am liking this girl from Rockaway.
I think you find more in a month then I do all year.

That's a good looking group there, Garry. I especially like that 2nd Connie with the nice drop in the haft. Looks like it's got a stamp on it. What is it?

those are mine. far left is Rogers Mfg. of CT.. next one is not a Connie but a Maine axe marked oakland, ME. Maybe the Maine companies made CT patterned axes. Don't know. I think that drop is typical of the maine handles I've seen.

Went to the local fleamarket yesterday with a box of antique fishing reals I no longer had an interest in, came home with these

I'm most excited about the broad axe, it seems almost perfect to me. Marked "made in sweeden" and looks as tho it hasn't been sharpened much if at all.
The saw is freshly sharpened but starting to "flash" a bit. Gonna remove the handles and clean that up. While the handles are off i'm gonna strip them and oil them instead paint.
The broad hatchet is marked "Galt". Any info would be appreciated. It's been painted black but appears to be in nice shape. The haft is hidious, not sure if ill rehang it or try to widdle it down to a usable shape

Great haul. That perf-lance saw is pretty fresh. What is it, 48"

The broad axe is a fine specimen, too.

Thanks Peg. Not sure on how to measure but it's 54" without the handle. Not sure if i'm man enough to pull it but I guess we'll see.
I've went through your thread on hanging a broad axe a few times since sunday, just need a chunk of wood now

Great haul, really nice shape on all of them. Galt is a Canadian company.

True. To be more specific, Galt is the city of manufacture now commonly known as Cambridge Ontario. Chances are Warnock is the name of the company that made it as they have Galt on their axes and you may see Warnock above Galt. You can find more info on Yesteryear tools about Warnock - I have 2 axes from them and they are excellent axes. Old company, chances are the axe is laminated steel although difficult to tell when painted.

I just love this place...more great info. Thank you mrkus, I was wondering if it had any age. Still debating on the paint, it actually is quite nice. More of a coating if you will, doesnt have a cheesy rust paint look.

I am chomping at the bit to try out the big canadian, i'm thinking a bent haft might be a little too much for my limited skill set. Anyone know of a place I might buy one that just needs to be fitted?

I went to the 127 yard sale on thursday and scored a BRAND NEW Wetterlings carpenter hatchet with the head cover for 20 bucks! I knew the guy didn't know what he had when i seen the $25.00 tag on it.He happily accepted my $20 dollar offer and i happily walked away with the deal of the day.I also picked up the nicest 1st year Remington 582 i have ever laid eyes on for $250.00 and also a set of Gerber shorty and pixie knives in a piggyback sheath from my uncle who was set up and selling.I am tickled with my pile of loot this year all paid for with a years worth of loose change.

Oh yeah something i thought was odd about the Wetterlings was i can't find a stamp on the head. The haft is marked with their usual mark and looks completely legit but i also saw one for sale on Ebay from a reputable dealer that wasn't stamped on the head either. So has anyone else come across an unmarked carpenters hatchet?

I took my two daughters, 4yo and 6yo, flea market hunting today. I found two pieces I really wanted but they were just too proud of then. One was a Case XX spear point single blade slip joint in carbon steel $70.00. The other was a Kelley Champion single bit. It was very clean. The poll had no marks on it the edge had one small chip but had never been sharpened. It needed rehung and was $65.00 firm. There was no room to negotiate the lady said. Too bad I wanted both.

We will be going again soon.

Chris

This is a rixford R51 I picked up this weekend. Anyone know anything about these?

Rixford was a family operation started in 1812 in New Hampshire and continuing on until 1950. At one point they had a factory in Montreal as well. Reported to be of very high quality.

They're worth something but I don't see any home runs there. Put them at auction and you'll find out what they're worth.
