Flicking knives all over the place, "Am I the only one that does this?"

It has also become a nervous tick/pastime for me haha. And I am alone at work all night so I mess with a lot of my knives. And on the phone, hearing that click in the phone would be awesome like was said before.
I also do it while reading, my wife gets angry haha.

I used to flick a lot while riding shotgun in my work truck. Forced myself to stop after being haunted by the scene in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels where a character gets impaled on his own knife in a collision. My knife now stays tucked in its pocket while on the road.

Yeah I wouldn't flick while driving either. Sometimes when I'm stopped at a stop light, but when you're moving it just doesn't seem to safe.

I do flick some knives, but only at home. I do it while on conference calls sometimes without really thinking about it (some of my conference calls are really boring).

I picked up another odd knife fondling habit from my best friend, spinning them. I'm not sure how to explain it, but if you take a closed folder in your hand and use your thumb to sort of flip it over in your loosely closed fingers (e.g. it jumps from lock side to the scale side on a frame lock) you'll know what I'm talking about. I do that repeatedly at high speed with some folders, some times (it works better with some knives than others). It's pointless and probably somewhat dangerous, in that with some knives you can actually spin them open pretty easily this way.

You would get the cops called on you for walking through my neighborhood waving a knife around.

I do play with some knives while at home with no one else around. I try not to irritate the people around me, And I know I would be annoyed if I had to hear that sound for any length of time.

Agreed! I certainly don't do it in front of people, if I'm outside it's in a secluded wooded pathway :-)

Now I'm a die-hard knife enthusiast. And I strongly believe that people should freely exercise their legal knife rights. But I believe that PLAYING with ones knife in public is really crossing the line and a BIG MISTAKE.

If I saw a person walking down the street repeatedly flicking a knife open, I might likely think he was deranged and I would strongly consider calling the cops. After all, I don't know the guy, I don't know what his intentions are, and walking around in PUBLIC repeatedly flicking a knife open makes no rational sense to me. Just as if I saw a person walking down the street carrying a gun in their hand, I would have to ask myself "What if he attacks someone on the street and I didn't do anything to try and stop him like simply calling the cops?".

Remember, how YOU perceive yourself isn't necessarily the same way that the rest of the world perceives you. YOU know that you're a good guy who has no intentions of harming anyone, but others who see you don't know this. And it doesn't cost them a dime to call the cops on you.

"911 what is your emergency"
"There's a man walking down the street playing with a knife!"

I GARUNTEE that this is something the cops would take a strong interest in. And when they respond to a call of a man "walking the street playing with a knife", don't be a bit surprised if they meet you with guns drawn and pointed at you. And if that happens, it only takes one little mistake, on your part or the cop, for you to get shot. Remember, like I said, THEY DON'T KNOW YOU. For all the cops know you are a deranged lunatic armed with a knife who won't hesitate to try and kill them.

I strongly suggest that if people want to play with their knives that they do it at home.

I do it all the time. When I'm in class I normally just flick half way so there's no sound and I do it under the table. Probably looks kind of weird of anyone is paying attention. But hey, it's that or fall asleep

I flick my knives whenever I get a chance. I flick in the restroom at home and at work. I flick during the 45 minute commute to and from work. I flick at work when I'm thinking. I flick when I'm watching a movie and when I'm listening to music. I always carry a knife on me so I can flick whenever.

Just flipped a knife through a whole conference call. I often flip this one lately when I'm just playing with a knife for no good reason:

After adjusting it a little and adding a touch of nano-oil, it flips very well and with the ~$10 I paid for it I really don't mind if it wears out.

I certainly agree. I edited the original post to clarify that I do not go around flashing my knives in front of people. I'm sure you'd get a cop called on you, especially for that one guy that mentioned he even did it in a grocery store sometimes. If I ever do it outside it's in very secluded woods with no one around, and I'll quickly put up the knife if I see anyone else walking.

That said, hey flicking knives all about is still fun though. :-) Thanks for the comment! Cheers! -AJ

I didn't do it too much until I got a ZT 0350 and the spring assist makes it more of a play toy. I do it driving, when I'm walking on the farm and sitting around the house. That being said I got my 0350 last Friday and got a second one from the shop to give my brother as a congrats on his first child. Shortly after I give it to him we go to lunch and sitting at the table in a crowded restaurant he pulls it out and flicks it open and proclaims what a cool gift it was... I said yes it was a cool gift but play with it later haha as the people at the next table peer at this tiger striped knife

It used to drive my ex-wife crazy! "All I hear is that click, clack!" Heh, heh. I never stopped. Still haven't. I'd rather have my knives then that witch any day of the week, though!!!!
:D:D:D:thumbup:

I also will try not to attract unnecessary attention to myself while in public, but I will sometimes find myself doing it anyway(when I am carrying a knife worthy of flicking that is).

I rarely do it in public. Occasionally at work. All the time at home lol. Especially when gaming and watching tv.

About the whole hearing it over the phone discussion I play a few games on PC and was on and off playing with my bali when someone who joined a Skype call that I met in Day Z (YouTube this game, it's ridiculous, like a end of the world survival game where you start with little supplies and have to find food, guns, medical supplies and ammo.) I heard him playing with something and asked him if it was a balisong as well and indeed it was, I then mirrored the sound with my bali and we both started laughing :)

Good to know your taking school serious and doing something that interests you. Your school cool with knives on campus? If they are I'm sure all the reports of people whipping them out in class will change things.

-------------

We live in society and sometimes that means respecting other people. It may be legal, it may be your right, it may be fun and it may be some anxiety relief but that DOESN'T make it right. Maybe you hate when people clip their nails in public but they can even if it bothers you. Maybe you are offended by a breast feeding mother but that's her choice to make. I would argue feeding a baby is different than playing with your knife but it's a point I'm making. Things can be done in a way as to minimize bothering others. The mother doesn't have to feed at a town square or busy community center. At work, if your fellow workers aren't bothered by the constant clicking, then go for it. At home, that's your castle, so go for it. Walking down a sidewalk or in a store it just stupid. If public knife flickers annoy enough people then laws might change.

One thing is for sure though. Grandpa and dad didn't whip out a 4" one hand opening "tac ta cool" blades in public unless there was an obvious purpose. I'm of the younger crowd but just don't get most of my peers. If you think it's fine to whip out your blade any time any place, then please visit the police station or court house enjoying that smooth action on your sweet knife.

Do it all the time, at my desk at work, watching tv, watering the lawn, using the restroom... all the time :D :p
