I picked up a Flip-It knife the other day from Smoky Mountain Knife Works. It occurs to me that this little knife, which requires two hands to slide the blade open and closed, might make a very good knife for use in mixed company (such as hysterical hoplophobes who nonetheless need things cut open).

What's your favorite sheeple-friendly blade?

a SAK... those red scales have a disarming effect :D

But another cool on is a SIFU... no kidding... when I pull open my 710 people go "wow nutcase!" but when I open my SIFU, people start to laugh and think I'm doing a pratcical joke or something. Besides..my SIFU looks like plastic with the black blade and the black handle.

Take care all & greetz, Bart.

As far as sheeple-friendly blades go, my favourites are:
Spyderco Navigator
Kershaw Chive
Victorinox Mini-Champ
Swiss-Tech Utili-key

None of the above knives raise any eyebrows when I use them in front of people. Also, I've travelled everywhere imaginable with the Swiss-Tech and it has yet to be noticed. When I do use it, the only comment I hear is "how neat it is."

Most sheeple like the Sog Crosscut on my keyring. They usually go into arrest when I pull out the Emerson to cut things properly...

Regards,

Ed
Usual Suspect

Kershaw Chive
old brass-n-walnut lockback
"U.S. Customs" keychain knife

None of my blades is particularly fond of sheeple.

OK, OK, I would say, my Buck Strider. When I snap it open, they just stare, and no one says a word.

The BM705 has always been on my list for use around the NCA (non-cutlery acclimated). You can take the clip off to make it a true pocket folder if you like...

Professor.

Eh, when I get the cash i'm gonna buy me an Emerson CQC7B, I figure it's discreet enough not to be alarming, while I wait to get that CQC7B i'm kinda considering a Kershaw Scallion, mostly just for fun but who knows? :)

The Benchmade 690 is the one I use so that customers don't go running around screaming bloody murder in the bike shop I work at. I think the nice warm looking wood has a calming effect on people. I can definately say customers don't like my M2 710, I think I suffered some hearing damage from the screams that resulted when I used it to cut repair tags off the bikes.

I picked up a few flip-its and gave them to people I work with who are always asking to borrow my blade. One went on a service call that required air travel. The security folks at the airport confiscated it, saying it was a box knife, and not allowed. This was months before Sept 11!!!

My favorite sheeple knife would be my Spyderco Dyad. It's small enough to not offend anyone, and the blade combo is neat as heck! I've gotten a few remarks on the agressive looking serrations on the sheepsfoot blade, but they quickly nod, grunt, and at least to pretend to understand when I explain that as a volunteer EMT, I may use the serrated blade to cut a person out of a car (never mind the fact that this is rarely the true case, but it does happen sometimes, and it placates them)

Another interesting note on a knife I made sheeple friendly, Which was my MT UDT When I first got it, I showed it around the security office, hospital, and Medical Transport company I worked at and the most frequent remarks I heard was "sharp, concealable, fast, dangerous" Then just for shucks and grins I tied a pink, purple, multiple colored lanyard on it (truth is that it made the knife lightning fast to get to) All of a sudden with a few girly colors, it was more frequently described as cute, handy, light, easy to carry. With the addition of a simple .35 piece of cord I was able to transfer a lethal weapon of assassins into a cute, handy lovable tool. go figure, eh?

Actually, I think I may pick up some of those "flip-its" depending on price. Seems they'd make good stocking stuffers around Christmas, and I may also hand some of them out in some of the classes I may end up teaching this year.

My favorite friendly knife is the David Boye lockback, of which I have several customized ones. This one is the fanciest:

Many of the small slipjoint folders by Case and others would be my favorites. People never seem to get upset by these knives.

C'mon, I can't believe no one got on me for my post above! :p :D Seriously, Non knife folks have commented on my Benchmade 940 (Oct 2000 blue handle), 770 Osborne, and my William Henry T12BT. They are elegant designs that are not "threatening" at all. Though, "threatening" is highly relative ;)
