most people that I know, including many Quakers, who have seem my green one think it to be quite nice. It is, however, illegal in Washington, DC, where the blade limit is 3". My Gunting is not illegal, but scares the living Hell out of people when I use it for any utility purpose, which is why I bought it. I have stopped using it as my EDC for the time being, as security and the level of paranoia around here has risen off the charts.
Even trying to visualize the Sifu as a hoplophobe-friendly knife boggles my mind! I once brought it in to a local CK&T store to show the staff that had never seen one and, when I pulled it out and snapped it open, even these knife-loving people jumped back with wide eyes. And, yes, Virginia, there are some CK&T stores with staff folk that actually like knives; try the one on Springfield Mall in Springfield, Virginia. They all loved the Sifu when they had a chance to pass it around and wished that the management of the company would let them sell it. Later, one of their clerks was looking at my Gunting after she had recognized the clip in my pocket, and she decided to order one from Roger at Bayou Lafourche since CK&T will not sell them. I did strongly urge her to get the tapes.
Right now, my choice for a hoplophobe-friendly knife is the Spydie Meerkat. It has become my EDC since 9/11/01, what with its 2" blade, its neat lock, and its generally non-offensive look. It also rides very deeply in any pocket and it has a very narrow wire clip so that it is damned near invisible unless you draw it. I like it a lot.
I also just got a Vesuvius from Anthony Cheeseboro, thank you, Anthony, and its blue shell inlay should, I would think, help make it a bit more appealing to non-knife folk. I love the 3 1/8" blade shape and the design of the hilt, as well as its Compression Lock.
Finally, the BM 770 just has to be one of the better choices for a gentleman's pocket knife. It is dressier than all get out, what with its carbon fiber scales and its nicely done file work, and it is so dainty looking that its appearance belies its effectiveness as a cutting device. It has a very nicely designed 3" blade of ATS-34 steel that takes a razor edge and that has a spear point that would make an excellent weapon, if needed. That would be my choice if I were going where I needed a dressy knife that could be used effectively for defense.
