Flying with a pistol?

The guy in New Jersey was arrested with the gun in his possession. He collected his bags because of problems with his flight. Its still a terrible travesty, but he was arrested because he had the gun in his bags and he was in control of his bags, not the airline.

It's a terrible thing for him, but it's a good lesson for us. Now I know that if I'm ever in a similar situation I need to insist that the airline provide an employee to handle the bag and transport it either to the baggage check of the other airline or to someplace where I can legally posses it. In a worst case scenario, I would have them take it to the FedEx counter so I could ship it home.

There was recently a case in which a fellow moved from CO to NJ, was at his parent's house, made a comment that led his mother to believe he was depressed and possibly suicidal, so she called po-lice on him and they searched his car. Found an unloaded pistol in a locked case in the trunk and a box of prohibited hollowpoint ammo. Insane judge sentenced him to 7 years in prison. Apparently after some unspecified "incident" during his confinement the governor commuted his sentence and released him -- but he still has the felony on his record -- even though the judge was removed from the bench for being too lenient with a local policeman who was caught performing a sex act with a calf.
